Witter and his stamina issue ???

In his last 2 fights we have seen Witter win all the early rounds & then seem to drain in the 2nd half of the fight, but i still cant seem to grasp that he has a stamina problem, i mean loook at the fella he looks in peak condition and aint that old yet and from what i can gather he works hard in the gym and his totally committed to his boxing, do people really think that his stamina is poor ???

I think he just needs to be a little more economical with his punches early in a fight. In both fights he is loading up and putting everything into every shot which seems to take a lot out of him.

Rather than trying to blow everyone away I think he needs to win the early rounds but expend less energy by not trying to score a KO with every shot.

it's his style i think, dancing about, throwing punchs from all kinds of angles and trying to take the guys head off with every punch is going to knacker you out....

also switch-hitters......great to watch, but i'm sure they spend more time thinking up fancy punches to knock someone out and not enough time on what they are going to do if they can't....if that makes sense

Being as big as he his, he must have to cut a lot of weight which will obviously hurt in the later rounds....
He needs to learn to fight like Ottke... just do enough to win the round....
No point winning the first 6 big (still 10-9 score though) and then narrowly losing the final 6

Chris Eubank looked the part but didn't like it at a frenetic pace. Admittedly, Eubank would have been happy with the pace Witter has set but stamina can be trained to a level (a very good level) but its a little bit genetic aswell.

You can never make a Lance Armstrong.

So yes, I think there is a stamina problem. I don't know his training regime, if it is anything like Naz' when he was with Ingle then he can work more on the stamina. Without me knowing Witter's regime it is hard for me to judge if his stamina is a weakness genetically or if he can improve on it.

I dont regard Witter as big at the weight? Why do you suggest this?

I think, with one or two exceptions ( Nelson and perhaps Bomber ) the Ingle style is one that gets old pretty quickly.

It depends on speed, agility and balance. All things that are increasingly difficult to keep to that level as one gets older.

Bomber had to leave Ingle and changed his style a little in his "second coming" while Nelson is,well, just a freak of nature.

I have to say that while I see Witter having the chance for a big shot at a title, he better do it soon. he is 31, no? And, his style is not one that is suited to longevity and he will find himself getting hit more and more in later rounds

he is very muscular and has been fighting at 140 for 8 years... during that time is appearance has changed (much more muscle)....he has fought at nearly 11 stone before.... He is not HUGE at the weight like a scot harrison or Freitas at super feather, but i dont think its easy for him at all to do 140

Funny this is coming up. A while back I got blasted for saying Witter's going to start slowing down soon, and that Hatton could well be around after Witter had gone.

Funny how suddenly Witter looks to be fading in the latter stages of fights then isn't it? Now of course it may be that he needs to pace himself better, maybe it's nervous energy, but a lot of it I think is his style.

Witter is constantly moving and changing direction, and rarely rests behind his guard, all the feints, massive shots and changes of directions are tiring. It's all well and good if you bang your opponent out inside 6 rounds, but what happens if they are still there.

I think that future Witter opponents will look at those fights, as Kotelnik appeared to do, and just fight negatively until half-way trying to nick rounds without leaving themselves too open.

Witter may well need to find a different strategy, he doesn't seem to winkle his opponents open so easily if they are able to poke out the jab and take centre ring.

He needs to win the early rounds expending as little energy as possible, if an opportunity comes and he hurts someone then open up by all means but t the moment he's trying to force a knockout too much early on.

I'll look on the positive side then, at least he can review his last two fights and see where he has gone wrong and try to turn them negatives into positives, and going 12 rounds twice in a year surely would have done him the world of good.

I've heard that his gym never do any fitness work. They leave it to the fighters themselves. That's from a reliable source.

I told you lot a year ago he would be exposed and I berated for it!!

He can't fight if the odds aren't 80-20 in his favour.

Simple, a Sheffield fighter will alway's be a Sheffield fighter.

I would like to see Witter fight under another trainer. NOt because I think Ingle is a bad trainer on the contrery he is one of the countrys best however I think after a time it is usefull for a fighter to get some new impotouse to give him a more rounded style.

However I do think he is a good boxer and we must not forgett that he has not been used to relying on his stamina he has gone from a 4 year pereod only once going as far as the 5th to two fights which went the distence that will be difficult for anyone I still have faith that he really can perform at the top level he is WBC number 2 WBA number 3 and IBF number 3 and with his current promoter he can soon expect big fights which I am confident he can live with.

I am a fan of Ingles, but, I am not sure if his style of training is really viable for but a handful of fighters who would, I proffer, be exceptional under any good trainer.

Of the stable, present and past, I can think of Nas, Nelson, Graham and arguably Witter who have had star careers. Nas admittedly fell of the tracks when he left but I suspect that is more down to the influence of his brother and his own ego than the trainers. Nelson, is as I say, a freak of nature and would have been that strong under any trainer ( and possibly a damn sight more exciting ) and Graham had a successful second stage to his career post Ingle.

On the other side, there are those who tried the Ingle style and crashed and burned like Rhodes and Reid.

When it is well executed the Ingle style is well worth the money. But, there are few fighters who can carry it out to a high level and sustain it through a career

Having a low bodyfat like Witter does not equate to high stamina. Bodybuilders/sprinters have notoriously poor stamina despite having the lowest bodyfat levels around.

Witter needs to learn to pick his punches better. He loads up on shots without waiting for an opening. He should throw combinations behind a jab and only throw big big shots if theres an opening. Your not going to hit a decent counter puncher throwing just 1 big shot. The Witter-Kotlenek fight reminded me so much of Hamed-Barrera (but Witter won).

Kotlenic probably was the worst stylistic match there is out there for Witter. None of the top 5 would be that negative against Witter so he'd have more openings.

Agree with the comparison, however, Witter didn't fight as bad overall as Hamed that night, and Barrera was a hell of a lot better than Kotelnik.

You could argue that better fighters will be less negative, but they will also be capable of fighting behind a tight guard and laying on some hard shots at the same time.

Whilst Witter has the power to hurt anyone in the division, he has looked vulnerable himself, and I suspect that someone like Cotto would be able to work their way inside and time him with a hook after a few rounds of smart boxing behind their jab and guard.

I think it will be Julio Diaz, would be a decent matchup :)

EBU have appointed Giuseppe Lauri as new mandatory challenger, it will be an exciting rematch, in the league of Calzaghe vs Veit 2.
