Mundine-Calzaghe talks collapse!
By Ray Wheatley -- World of Boxing
Negotiations have stopped for Anthony Mundine to challenge WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzage in Cardiff, Wales on September 10. The management of the former WBA 168 pound champion Mundine would not agree to have the Australian being promoted in four of his championship fights (options) if he was successful in taking the crown from the Welshman. Mundine was very impressive in a losing a twelve round decision to WBA super middleweight champion Mikkell Kessler in Sydney last month in what experts regard as the Aboriginal's best ring performance.

i see allegedly's confident that joe can beat mundine....what a joke

4 options, on a recent former champion and top contender who could make a fight with anyone! :D :D :D

Maybe wanky is scared the super fast Mundine will make Joe miss and look silly. After the opposition that Joe has been fighting it wouldn't suprise me if Mundine beat him on points.

do come on first time joe connects with that glass jaw its game over.

i know joe's skills are on the wane but lets not get over hyped here Mundine is ok but nothing special. Lets put it this way he was a better Rugby league player than he is boxer.

Mundine is getting better with every fight. I think at this point in both fighters careers mundine would easily win.

of course you do you are australian

mundine would get done by froch with that chin let alone JC he knows too much and is too experienced. Mundine is far too open and far too easy to hit and far too chinny. :TU:

Mundine is not as bad as people think, Kessler and Echols both hit hard and neither stopped him. Could the Ottke KO loss be down to inexperience and fatigue as Mundine himself claimed afterwards? Nishizawa dropped Mundine but he was not badly hurt and Nishizawa also dropped Markus Beyer in a later fight.

Does Mundine really possess the glass chin we have all labelled him with? He is fast and elusive and i think a fight with Calzaghe would be live and very interesting, especially the new easier to hit Calzaghe we are seeing these days.

only guys with a glass chin lost by KO vs Sven Ottke......Joe would kill this guy in 3 rounds maximum. :box:

Agree that Calzaghe will win but not that fast. IMO Mundine would be the best opponent Calzaghe had faced in a long time.
But why pick an opponent who has just lost a title bid against one of the other champs in the division. Doesn't that sound like something that Calzaghe and Ottke has been involved in before.
And options on 4 fights? I hope that this is not true since that really sounds like somebody is scared.

IMO Joe should fight Kessler or Beyer or step finally up to LH where he could rech the top fast. RJJ, Tarver and Johnson are all washed out but nobody recognised it. Tiozzo, Erdei, Adamek, Ulrich a.s.o. are beatable. He could be #1 soon and has the right age for it.

Youre over rating Joe, Who has he beaten in the last 2-3 years that makes you think he will beat anyone of Lacy Kessler Beyer Green Mundine nevermind the Light Heavys. Joe was good 5 years ago but latley he hasn't fought any tough opposition and this will hurt him if he gets into a trully tough fight.

I don't think Mundine has a glass jaw after watching the Kessler fight, Either his chin is not that bad or Kessler dosn't have good punching power.

I agree with Steve689, people are way too harsh on Mundine for being stopped against Ottke in his 11th fight with no amature experience.

It would be Joe's toughest fight since Brewer imo so I dunno why people are down on it. Yes i'd rather he tried to unify but lets be honest that is never going to happen and he isn't going to step up to light heavy unless it's straight into a title shot. He's just grown so attached to that WBO belt

Kessler hits harder than Calazage and couldn't put him away. So slapping won't ko him. Mundine was a novice when Otke ko'd him.

It's possible Joe has been fighting to his level of opposition, but anyone who get's floored by Salem, is in serious jeapardy of losing.

Calzaghe-Kessler is the one i want to see, Kessler is a decent fighter and looked very capable and organised versus Mundine even though the fight was a lot closer than the ludicrous scoring perceived it to be. They should get Calzaghe in with Danny Green and let's see a tear up, it would be fun while it lasted, either way with how easy Joe is to hit these days.

Don't forget Calzaghe's speed is not there like it used to be that's even if he was as fast as Ian Darke always made out. Watching him in with Robin Reid and even Will McIntyre that "blurring handspeed" often appeared to me as a flurry of slaps hitting gloves.

That's debatable. Who has Kessler stopped that Calzaghe wouldn't have?

While I don't agree that Mundine has a glass jaw, getting dropped by the decent-but-not-murderous punching Nishizawa doesn't suggest a Robin Reid-like chin. Joe's past his best, but he still has enough pop to stop Mundine. Is the same true of Mundine? He's a tidy puncher, and Joe's getting easier to hit, but he's always had a very good chin.

Joe catches up to Mundine late while behind on the scorecards woul be my pick.

Calzaghe ko´s mundine inside 6 rounds easy

Although Joe maybe on the wane lets not go overboard, the only guy who beats him at 168-175 is maybe tarver

Interesting point: i was watching some HBO coverage of a Naz fight against bungu and after the KO George Foreman said ¨if people criticise Naz its because its fashionable to do so¨

I think sometimes its easy to knock someone and thats maybe the case with Joe

yes he is injury prone a bit
yes he has not stepped it up as we would all like

I ask you if he is a fraud then why don´t Tarver, hopkins etc knock this fraud out

tell you why they know cos they are clever thats its a risky fight for them

and before anyone says why should Bhop fight in cardiff for 4 million yada yada yada then didn´t people give Hatton stick for taking fights at home where the money was

it works both ways guys - simple if joe is a fraud then bhop, tarver, johnson etc come on and ko him and rid the bosing world of this fraud

if not then shut up and fight robbie allen and eastman instead

are you quite mad, no one gave hatotn stick?

fuckinell the stuick calzaghe has taken in the past year is nothign to what was going around pre Zoo.

Most folk dont care aobut Joe thats why, cos he has fobbed em off so many times before. His next fight is always gonna be a the big one.

and it never happens.

give over mate. Tarver and Hopkins don't need Calzaghe, they already have reputations. It's Calzaghe who has been harping on year after year about a defining fight, then pulling out. He turned down Kessler because 'nobody knows who he is outside of Denmark' except the sanctioning bodies of course, who've given him a belt.

Then Calzaghe tells us he's sorry he's missed to many opportunities because of fear of flying, and next thing he's in Vegas sitting ringside.

Then Johnson offers to come and fight on Joe's turf. He twice pulled out of the Johnson bout, which represented a genuine chance of a real belt and big name recognition and a possible shot at Jones Jr. Now he's missed the boat.

Calzaghe used to be one of my favourite fighters, but I've become bored of the endless talk interspersed with meaningless mandatory defences of his WBO belt. Whilst Calzaghe has been fighting the Veit's, Pudwill's and Salem's of this world, Hopkins has beaten Trinidad, DLH, Eastman and taken on the best of the young pretenders in Taylor. Tarver has fought Johnson twice and Jones, Johnson has fought Tarver twice and Jones.

You seriously think the onus is on any of these guys to shut Joe's mouth?

There's no need to, because these days, when Joe shouts, nobody listens.

Whether or not he would beat Mundine, who knows, Mundine is better than anyone Joe has beaten since Brewer, but Calzahe is more experienced and on paper at least better. It's not really the point, because like every other fight mentioned alongside Calzaghe's name, it probably will never happen.

Calzaghe is probably still the best SM in the world, but he certainly hasn't gone out of his way to prove it.

Let's see what happens if Lacy gets by Reid, call me a cynic, but what the chances of Calzaghe finding a way around that one too?

Maybe my point was not made clearly enough

of course hopkins and johnson etc have fought better opponents

what i am saying is why if joe is that bad then not just take 3-4 million and knock him out and get rid??

i accept joe needs a fight of substance sooner rather than later but dont cirticise just cos you dont like him

Posted: 02 Aug 2005, 10:02

that hte frustrating thing wrists i do like him.

but as someon who 1. spent the time to go to a pointles press conference for the Johnosn fight, write it up in my lunch hour etc etc

and 2
as a fan who bought tickets for that card, and five of them at 110 quid a go, i was most pissed when Joe decided bangin half the blondes in cardiff was more important than training and errrr pulled out

do you really think he deserves much sympathy, if it were you would you be happy? i dont reckon you would mate. the shit i took of my mates was untold, as they moved the date and it was hatton vilches only,
like i coudl do something about it?

Luckily i got a full refund otherwise i would have been still getting it in the neck now but its not one of the better trips ive organised. :TU:

Your not Jimbo of howitzer league fame by any chance??

does joe skmp on training?

so where from here i think

sep 9th joe v pemberton/markuson/magee

jan/feb 06 v lacy

apr/may 06 v erdei/somebody solid at 175

jun/jul 06 v woods

sep/oct 06 v tarver/jones

jan 06 v froch hopefully just to shout this loser up

thoughts??

that would be pretty much ok for me although 6 fights in 18 months is against what joe normally does but sya he did these fights would everyone agree that this schedule was fair enough and would answer a lot of critics

im not jim but i know him.
always found him to be a top fella.

i hope you are right and he goes on to make the super fights but until it happens he is in my bad books for fornicating up my weekend and those of my mates..

mind you i wasnt that chufffed with hatton at the time neither he was so out of shape they had to move the show by a week. But he redemmed himself, somethign Joe has yet to do.

In seriousness its a major problem with the sport all this dicking about, seriously sometimes I go trhough fazes whwere i really just couldnt give a shit due to cancellations and politics etc etc.

Last year was shocking and in truth ive struggled since to get back into the writing side of things cos it just doesnt inspire me to do it. Id rather go and watch cricket when Im gaurenteed that England will be Playing Australia if thats what it say on the ticket on the date that it says.

and you wonder why the sport is in trouble, its exactly folk like JC that are shitting on the fans from a great height. It puts you off such experiences. Then things like Hatotn v Zoo put you back on again.

Dont get me wrong i love the sport and i always will i just dont know how much longer you maintain going to such events cos its so likely to fall through.

Look at williams the other week.
