Thaxton Hungary for more success.
Jon Thaxton will defend his WBF lightweight title and also try to add the IBC title to his collection at the home of Norwich City football club, Carrow Road, on the 3rd September.
Up against Thaxton will be the experienced Hungarian Laszlo Bognar who is currently the IBC lightweight champion. The thirty-seven year old southpaw who hails from Paks is currently 35-9-2 and is on a good run of five unbeaten in which time he has picked up the IBC, IBU and Hungarian lightweight titles and like Thaxton seems to be enjoying an Indian Summer in his career.
Bognar is no stranger to these shores having defeated Michael Gomez for the WBU intercontinental title in Widnes in 2001, before Gomez avenged the result in their next fight. Even though he was down twice Gomez came back to stop Bognar in the third.
Bognar’s other two visits to England have seen him lose in three rounds to the current British, Commonwealth and European super-featherweight champion Alex Arthur and he was unsuccessful in a challenge for the WBA International super-featherweight title against Tontcho Tontchev.
Thaxton and Bognar are almost identically placed on the IBO’s independents ratings with Thaxton at 77 and Bognar at 79.
Thirty-year old Thaxton (27-7) claimed the WBF title when he knocked out Frenchman Christophe De Bussilet at the end of the fourth round in front of a partisan crowd at the Sports Village in April.
Since returning from a two-year lay-off Thaxton has been moving successful up the British rankings and is currently placed at number two in the latest ratings published by ‘Boxing Monthly’ behind the former IBO champion Jason Cook, who is unlikely to fight at the weight again and a win against Bognar should see Jon rated in the top ten by the European Boxing Union.
Also on the card, billed as “The Magnificent Seven” will be Earl Ling, Danny Boy Smith, Jackson Williams, Steve Russell, Danny McIntosh and Sam Sexton who will be making his professional debut.
Promoter Neil Featherby who has worked tirelessly to get this promotion on had this to say about the event
“To have Jon Thaxton boxing Laszlo Bognar here at Carrow Road on September 3rd will alone make for a fantastic occasion. Jon will be defending his WBF Title as will Laszlo with his IBC Title.
We will also have six other local fighters making up the support card which just goes to show how far professional boxing has come here in Norwich during the last two to three years. This of course is mainly due in part to the hard work and lengths that Graham Everett and Carl Moore have gone too to make this happen.
Having had not only most of the Norwich City first team squad at our last show, but the management and personnel as well, obviously impressed the club enough for them to then suggest we stage our next promotion at their Carrow Road ground. It really should be a tremendous night and one that Jono and the rest of the lads will really remember for a long time to come.”

“To walk out at Carrow Road in front of 6,000 fans will be unbelievable. Laszlo Bognar comes with a good record, but he won't be going home with anything I can assure you and him of that. I can't wait that's all I can say at the minute.”
The show will be promoted by Sportlink Boxing Promotions in association with Norwich City Football Club and Carl Moore and the event will be sponsored by Carl Moore and MOCO.
Tickets will be priced at £195 (NCFC Corporate), £100 VIP, £75, £50, £40, £25 and £15 Concessions (i.e. Junior and OAP.) and will be available from 9am tomorrow (2nd August) from Sportlink on 01603 868606 and the Norwich City club ticket office.
