Calzaghe saying Reids bitter

Posted: 03 Aug 2005, 06:19
by Max Molyneux
Says he doesn't hold out much hope of the Runcorn man facing him if he wins the IBF super-middleweight title on Saturday night. Says he'd wanted to face himthough if he wins but doesn't think he has nothing to prove fighting him again.

I think it says it all that despite being in the wilderness for years following the loss of his titles, Reid has gone on to face Ottke, Magee and now Lacy, whilst Calzaghe bangs on endlessly about his 'defining fight' and has found a way to make fights with Johnson, Kessler, Mundine, Green, and just about every other possible exciting fight not happen.

I believe Calzaghe is a better fighter than Reid, but Reid has been prepared to put up and take big fights, though of course that's partly because he hasn't got the earning power of Calzaghe.

Calzaghe was once probably the hottest property in British boxing once Naz went, but he's managed to lose most of his fanbase by boring people stupid with endless talk and mediocre opponents.

Reid is £4.50/£1 on Betfair.

Worth a few quid? :-?

It's a good price, better than the one I have, but I can't help feeling, as stated in other threads, that Reid may win this everywhere but on the cards that count...

Calzaghe
"Obviously, if he wins he'd have the belt so I'd want to fight him but I don't think I have anything to prove in regards to Reid".

Calzaghe
"But believe me, I've still got a lot to give and I showed that by going to Germany and fighting an underrated fighter, Mario Veit.

So you have nothing to prove by fighting Reid again, who for whatever reason gave you one of your hardest fights, but it was an achievement in your eyes to fight a rematch with Veit, a fighter you had already stopped in ONE ROUND!!!

Oh dear.

Rudy Markussen was offered to fight Calzaghe in September but turned the offer down. It doesnt say what he was offered in the article, but it says that Mundine was offered $50K + 4 options for the fight and the offer for Markussen was about the same.

Some quotes (translated)
Rudy Markussen wrote:I still want to fight Joe Calzaghe, and I still think that I will have a good chance of winning, but I have to demand at least a decent purse for being in a main event in Cardiff
Bettina Palle wrote: "Unless allegedly suddenly chooses to up his offer to Rudy Markussen, I will forget everything about Calzaghe and instead concentrate on the task of making Rudy WBOs next official challenger
The article also confirm that Thomas Damgaard is out of the fight vs Urkal on september 3rd. Team Palle will now consider if they will keep Damgaard in their stable.

In a new interview B Ettina Palle says "I cant box the fights myself" and she says that the contracts for Damgaard vs Urkal and Calzaghe vs Markussen were ok. She says that the danish boxers must realize that there isnt alot of money anymore and the big fights will be in other countries.
Regarding the Calzaghe vs Markussen fight she says that Markussen was in his right to turn down the offer but personally she would have loved "to see the world title fight between Calzaghe and Markussen in Cardiff with 2 other danes on the undercard start off the fall season for Team Palle and 4Sport (The TV station that shows their fights) with a mighty "bang"."

$50k? That is chump change, especially with 4 options. Is it any wonder Calzaghe's record is littered with hopeless nobodies with those sort of terms.

I'm sure Kid Fire McIntyre would do it for $20k, perhaps we could get that much anticipated rematch on for next month.
