If Calzaghe and Lacy does happen, the winner gets their title.

So if Calzaghe wins at least he will finally hold a genuine title...not that IBF thing either 8)

If he did win it we might get to see the likes of Tocker Pudwill fighting the Ring champion! HA!

They put Lacy up to three in their latest rankings.

no.

ottke and calzaghe used to switch around between 1 and 2 a lot but neither was ever given the ring title.

There has never been a recognised Ring champion at 168.

Calzaghe's Ring will probably go before November. ;)

The Ring championship has been very contradictory of late, I mean Ottke was never the Ring champion but Vitali Klitchsko is.

I think there was a stronger case for Ottke than the Calzaghe vs Lacy winner with Ottke holding two of the big THREE belts.

I think they are being dictated by finances aswell - that why the Lacy vs Calzaghe winner will be a ring champion (expect some big clashes for the winner) and so is Vitali.

For a vacant Ring belt to be at stake there has to be a fight between either #1 and #2 or #1 and #3. And with Ottke and Calzaghe in two of those three positions for a long time it never happened. Calzaghe v Lacy would be #1 against #3. Just shows the sorry state the division has been really with the can't travel won't travel club!

That's why Ottke was never Ring champion, he never made fights with the best ranked in the division i.e. Calzaghe, Beyer etc.

Still a little harsh on him, I mean what did Calzaghe do to really warrant that #1 position.

I take it that when Ottke fought Mitchell, Ottke was at #2 and Mitchell at #3. Its a bit harsh cause the ranking of Ottke and Calzaghe was close and open to opinion back then.

Same now, I think there is a clear case for not having Lacy in the top 3 - Calzaghe, Beyer and Kessler could easily be the top 3.

Mundine at #3 ! Man, he lost to Scica (or however you spell it). People seem to have forgotton that loss.

Thought they would gave one to Ottke after unifying.

Ring have moved Lacy up to 3 after his win over Reid in their latest ratings.

Ottke was number 1 I think.

When Ottke fought Mitchell, Byron was not in the top 3 hence no Ring title on the line.

I agree that #3 seems laughably high for Mundine, but his loss to Siaca came on a grade 2 sprained ankle which he suffered about a week before the fight. He had basically no movement that night, and it played in to Siaca's hands, being the stronger/slower guy. The Mundine that fought Kessler would have handled Siaca IMO.

All maybe, but a loss is a loss, Mundine should be ranked lower than Siaca.

Beyer should take on Kessler and the winner of that should fight the winner of Lacy - Calzaghe. Only then can there finally be a World Champion at 12st. The Ring belt takes a further notch down the credibility ladder (didn't take long, eh?) if they nominate a Champion (what a coincidence it's likely to be an American) without going through the process to create one.

Tsypko could the be the first defence of the new 168lb champ, then the likes of Mundine, Markussen, Magee, maybe throw in a supposed dangerman like Andrade, then maybe a fight with a former titlist... and before you know it you have a recognizable Champion with a legacy, who sets a benchmark for the division.

They have a process already for vacant titles, if #1 faces #2 or #3 then its a ring title fight. That's the way they have always done it.

According to Team Palle Mundine and Tsypko will fight in an eliminator for the right to be the next mandatory for Kessler.
They also write that whoever wins the eliminator, the mandatory defense is most likely to be in Australia or Germany.

Sorry, my post wasn't clear enough - a tournament is the best way to crown a vacant champ, IMO. Tournaments > rankings. Any rankings can be quietly manipulated, easily. If I remember right Lampley and Merchant are on the board of Ring magazine and actually decide the rankings, which would explain Vitali's nominance (given he appears on HBO). It's also for this reason it's not so surprising to see them clamour to crown the winner of Lacy - Calzaghe, considering Lacy is hot right now and Joe showing signs he's fading. An American champion is in their interests (even though he's on Showtime, he still brings more selling power for their mag) than some Euro fraud who never fights out his back garden. It would be funny as funk if Calzghe actually won then resumed his usual level of opposition.

They should do it the old fashioned way and have all the participants introduced to the (TV) audience before each semi-final. Of course all the differences to do with promotion and TV rights (not to mention geography) make this impossible, but it's nice to pipe dream.

Ahh Manos your post was great in a perfect world, i could see all the Super Middleweights fighting each other for the right to be No. 1 it would be so sweet. Whether it will happen though...i won't hold my breath

Steve, the ironic thing is that such a Champion can be a very shrewd investment for 168lb'ers in the future, but with all the fighters in the division being so fragmented in different promotional outfits, there's really no chance at all of it happening any time soon. And the division will continue to loiter on that level just below glamour, no matter who the 'Ring' or 'Unified' champ is. :( :x
