Darchinyan stops Jiminez!

IBF/IBO flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (24-0) scored a fifth round stoppage over Jair Jiminez (22-5-1) of Colombia to retain the championship tonight at the Sydney Entertainment Center, Sydney, NSW, Australia. Southpaw Darchinyan found the range early and delivered power shots to the head and body to slowly chop down the challenger.

In round four Jiminez was dropped for a eight count by a powerfull left cross but he survived to finish the round but was on wobbly legs at the bell. Round five saw the champion attacking with both hands staggering Jiminez several times at which point the referee John Wright crowned Darchinyan to save the challenger from further punishment.

Darchinyan said, "I want to keep defending my title in Australia - I do not want to fight overseas - Australia is now my country and I need boxing fans to support me. We picked Jiminez as a challenger because he is a strong [fighter]. I will defend my title against top IBF challenger Damien Kelly in three months."

Darchinyan captured the title in 2004 by dethroning the previously undefeated Irene Pacheco in eleven rounds in Florida. He defended the title successfully in March by stopping Mzukisi Sikali of South Africa in eight rounds. Jiminez was stopped in six rounds by Gerson Guerrero in his last ring outing in December 2004.

Tough fight for Kelly, another hostile crowd. Wish him well, he belongs in this league just a shame he is not fighting a slightly easier champion first.

Would you say Jason Booth belongs in this league too, Stu? Kelly will get clobbered again here but good on him its another decent pay day.

i wouldn't take the fight if i was kelly. he's gonna get slaughtered.

No, cause Kelly won the fight well.

This is coming at a bad time for Kelly, he's on the slide and Darchinyan is hitting peak form. This could well be a career ender for Kelly.

He did enough to scrape a draw at best. And the Mahmutov fight wasn't even close but he got away with that one too.

I dont agree, I thought Kelly beat Booth pretty handily.

So did most people, but then most people can't stand the Booth brothers and Darke & Watt produced some of the worst commentary I've ever had to endure.

Booth is better than Kelly, it was close but he won that fight.

Completely disagree about the commentary aspect, I thought it was Booth, Booth, Booth. I was literally chucking stuff at the TV cause I thought it was bias.

and Barry's score card was well weird if I remember rightly, I'll have to view the tape again but I remember at the halfway point mine and Barry's cards being completely opposite.

I was as equally exasperated at way they seemed to think it was up to Booth to "steal" the fight from Kelly. Like Kelly owns the fornicating decison already? They behaved like a couple of clowns on the mic, I thought the bias was all around Kelly.

One day you and me will have to sit down and watch this fight together and sort this out once and for all!

Yeah, but I don't think he will ever agree. We both stick to our guns and are stubborn.

Good shot for Kelly but i think he will get stopped, his chance came and went when he fought the excellent Pacheco.

Another tough Title shot for Kelly against the hard hitting southpaw Vic Darchinyan.

I wish Kelly well and glad he is getting one (last?) shot at a major title but he is obviously the underdog in this fight.

Despite what most thought, I really did think he did okay vs Pachecco. I thought it was level (or Kelly ahead) at the time of the first KD. However, he is a couple years more advanced now and this guy beat Pachecco.

He doesn't like going for the easy option does he.

Absolutely, but part of me wants him to go for one of the lesser big four champions so he can tell his grand kids "I was a geniune world champion", without having to dig up his IBO belt.
