Rothmann vs O Neil Bell

Intriguing fight this - Rothman is a big dog and I think he has a good chance in this one.

Apparently, Bell was lucky lucky lucky to beat Brown for the vacant title. He is without doubt a tremendous puncher, but is he a tremendous boxer? He did beat Arthur Williams pretty well, but was not near as convincing as David Haye was and I thought Williams had a "shot" look vs Bell also.

Rothmann got flatterned vs Thompson, but normally his chin is pretty durable. I still think Bell will ultimately get to him, but Rothman could quite easily outbox him and score the upset.

However, recently, the bookies have had it spot on - not many upsets in recent months.

Rothmann's been brought along nicely but only one fight since a pair of losses, in with a big puncher, he's got to have some hefty self-belief to carry this one through. I was very impressed with him against Thompson, he showed he has the goods to do a job at a good level, but that last shot from Thompson stands out in my mnd as one of the best defeat-to-victory moments I've seen.

The only fight of Bell's I've seen is his KO of Ezra Sellars which, whilst a good performance, wasn't entirely beyond expectation.

A lot of this depends on Rothmann's state of mind and whether he can weather the storms that Bell will undoubtedly throw at him. Evens I'd favour Bell but if Rothmann's anything like long odds I'd have a punt

If Rothmann wins could we have Thompson v Rothmann 2 for IBF and IBO.Thompson is ranked number 11 by ibf ahead of Rothmann.
Now that would be a good return match.

Rothmann has a bad right hand as I understand it, which prevents him landing any meaningful straight shots, which seriously hampers him against a big puncher. Another loss for Rothmann here.

an upset is not out of the question for Rothmann, he's strong with a good chin and nice skills, if Bell just relies on trying to take Rothmann out with one shot he could find himself being outboxed.

If Rothmann can stick to a gameplan of boxing from range and taking Bell into the championship rounds I think he will win by late stoppage. He only lost to Thompson through getting complaicant - he tends to loose concentration and can be fragile mentally, but he has all the tools to win this fight and be a force in the division.

He did well against Thompson for the majority of the fight, but let's not forget, he was actually down twice and his punches really had very little authority.

If you review the fight, it's actually clear that Thompson wasn't really badly hurt often in the fight, it was his balance which let him down. He always looks like he is about to go over at any moment, but rarely actually is.

As I remember Rothmann got nailed right on the bell around the fifth, which would concur with a loss of concentration and then when he was nailed with the second KO punch most of the ringside spectators were calling for the ref to stop the fight to save Carl further punishment, Rothmann "thought" it was as good as his and had relaxed. Carl was hit with everything at will and his face afterwards showed this...I do agree though that Rothmanns right hand is not 100% and he has admitted as such himself.

I've watched it a few times, and i think Thompson was hurt on quite a few occasions, he was only a couple of punches from being stopped himself when he landed the right hand. I know Thompson doesn't have the best balance in the world, but i think it was the punches he took that made him wobbly that night.

On another note, funny how boxing works, Thompson who knocked out Rothmann is nowhere near a major title fight, is he still looking or has he retired? i heard some rumours about it a week ago

This is an interesting fight, Bell has a pretty good record on paper if you examine his slate and he obviously hits hard, for this fight though i go for Bell on points in a dull affair.

Myself and Ian were at ringside for that, and we spoke to Richie Davis, who said he was seconds away from stopping the fight.

It's a shame Thompson cannot get the fights he wants, if anyone has produced the goods time and time again and brought excitement to the crowd it's Thompson. I've got tremendous respect for Carl, he's really a guy who has given his all in every fight, even in his losing effort to Ezra sellers. Looking back on his fight with Nelson, I feel now he should have been given a bit more of a chance, though it may well not have made any difference.

Carl has always claimed that he suckers people in, and I never believed him, but having watched more of his fights you have to say he does.

Watch the fight with Rothmann again, Carl goes to the ropes, sags back and then times him beautifully with a surprisingly fast left jab and massive right hand, bingo!

Thompson looked on the verge of being stopped against Haye too, but again, watch the fight again, he's not taking many flush shots.

Thompson took a lot of shots from Rothmann, but few of them had much sting, aside from the knockdown, Rothmann's shots were more slaps than meaty shot. He was taking enough to suggest it should be stopped, and certainly I was calling for it to be stopped.

Thompson's style is deceptively effective, he looks so clumsy, but his left jab is in fact excellent, and his handspeed at times is better than it looks. He can be hit, but he is pretty good at muffling the effect of shots.

I'm going for a Bell stoppage, though not with the greatest of confidence. Decent scrap.

Been checking out a similar thread on the Current Scene and it seems they are less than impressed by this fight being made, particularly questioning Rothmann's involvement considering his recent form guide. I suppose they have a point.

I think that Rothmann will know that he won't get many other chances at a top title if he blows this one, so it depends as if he sees this fight as a final payday, or gets his mind right and comes out to perform at his very best.

If he does perform , he stands a chance of winning.

IBF cruiserweight champion O'Neil "Super Nova" Bell (25-1-1, 23 KOs) scored a spectacular eleventh round knockout over Sebastian Rothmann (18-4-2, 12 KOs) to retain his world title. Rothmann gave Bell all he could handle until Bell connected with a big right hand to knock out Rothmann at 2:09 of round eleven. At the time of the KO, the bout was even on two cards with Rothmann ahead on the other card.

Rothman was well in the bout by the sound of it but ran out of steam late on, good win for Bell though. Bell V Mormeck anyone?

Why not, there are some excellent cruiserweight bouts this weeks but Bell and Mormeck are clear 1 and 2 with Nelson seemingly in semi retirement or something.

Yep, it would have taken more than 20 Rothmans to stop Bell. You've got to give him #2 to Mormeck, a lot of that due to the belt and Nelson's innactivity as Stu says. Whether he want's it or not, I don't think Nelson would get a fight with either now.

Yes, I hope its not the end for Rothmann at this level, I think he belongs there.
