according to the daily mirror, witter turn down a short notice fight (24th sept) v cotto....saying he deserves "a geniune shot at a world title on my terms" & "would rather wait to take his chance against WBC champ mayweather".

he's never gonna fight mayweather cos mayweather's never gonna fight at light welter again so i guess witter's waiting for a vacant title shot?

I don't blame him, why should he take it at short notice?

I agree that he shouldn't take a Cotto fight on 2 weeks notice. But I really can't see him getting a shot at Mayweather anytime soon, WBC no.1 or not.

Christ! it makes me sick that these people try it on like this and offer Witter a shot but at such notice. Why the hell should he take a fight with someone like Cotto at short notice... no way!. If he lost that would be it, he would never get another chance. The fact that Witter only gets offered these sort of fights at short notice shows that the top men see him as the man to avoid.
What happened to Hatton 'taking care of Witter' like he said he'd do on SKY about 3 years ago!. Now he wants to fight Maussa who is just a tough club fighter!.......... :x

I think its more likely that Mayweather vacates and heads up to 147.... leaving Witter and A.N.Other to fight for the vacant WBC title.

How do people see a Cotto - Witter fight going, i personally would see Cotto grabbing a points decision or late TKO, i don't think Witter would get through Cotto's defence.

I agree. I see Cotto's tight guard getting him through the first 4 or 5 rounds, and then he'd unleash some of those combo's onto an increasingly wild and tiring Witter. Either a late stoppage, or a widish points decision if Junior gets on his bike a la Judah.

Yes when you are a serious contender and ranked the way witter is the title shot is so close anyway that there is no need to take these short notice fights.

Witter surely realises he won't get a shot at Mayweather, he is holding out for the WBC belt to be vacated and then he can box off for it with another contender. As for Cotto i would expect Witter to give him problems for the early fight but when Witter tires late on i don't expect Cotto to let him off the hook as easily as some of the other guys have and end up stopping Witter late on.

If Witter couldn't get through Kotelnik's defence he isn't getting through Cotto's, far too good at the basics for Junior. Cotto stoppage in 7 with Witter looking completely out of ideas.

No way should Witter be taking any fight at 2 weeks notice, he's worked his way up the ranking and a loss will all but end his career at the moment. Hopefully he'll get a shot at the vacant title and we can finally get the Hatton fight on in a unification match.

Quite right. I think what Witter means is he will fight in his opponents back yard for the opportunity, not take three weeks notice like some club fighter

If Witter fights like he fought against Kotelnik he will get fucked upside down by Cotto, I've seen Witter fighter better before, but I am beginning to wonder if he's not on the slide, either mentally or physically. Witter's recent performances have been worrying, the sudden slump against N'dou, and the frankly awful performance against Kotelnik. If Kotelnik had had more of a pop, Witter could have been in serious trouble in that fight, as he looked absolutely shattered over the last 3rd.

With their respective styles, I reckon Cotto could iron Witter out.

And if Cotto performs like he did against Corley Witter will destroy him, and I think Cotto will come forward and take far more risks than Kotelnik did.

i was joking, calm down. Cotto would be a nightmare for a prepared Witter. All that switching and leaping would get him dissected with counter shots. He had few enough ideas vs N'dou and Kotelnik.

of course, he fought Judah on late notice (when inexperienced) & look where that got him.

I think Witter Cotto would be good but only if it is a fair fight and if that happened then Witter would be in with a good chance. Witter did better than Cotto against N'Dou and one can only assume a couple of 12 round fights did him some good.

Truth is, I don't think Witter would take this fight even with 2 years notice.
