70's Sweet Science practicioner Jimmy Young vs 2005 Slick Techno Boxer Chris Byrd.
Who would likely end up ahead at the 12th or 15th round of this theoretical clinical clash?

Doggone it, Buzzy!! This would be like a pillow fight. One or the other wins by split decision and the whole crowd says, "Thank God it's over!"

Young on points.
Jimmy Young was a level above Chris Byrd in my humble opinion.

I agree with KOJOE. Byrd has excelled against lumbering slow HWs who gas late like Tua, Golota (who he still had some big problems with), 2003 Holyfield, and McCline. Throughout his career he's shown to be very vulnerable to a good snapping jab, as vs Oquendo and W. Klitschko and a good work-rate. Young faced far more forminadable comp who had excellent jabs, such as Norton, Foreman, and Lyle, and gave them all complete fits. Young also, although a small HW, was a natural 200 lber, and had slightly more power in his shots.

should a chess board be placed in the middle of the ring? Or should we leave it as a fight?

This would be a great chess match for the boxing purists. I think that it could go either way.

At his best, Young was a couple of levels above Byrd.
