Archie Moore vs sugar ray robinson

this fight almost happened and both could have fought while still in their prime. If this fight were to happen, it would have been in 1951 or 52.

robinson was only 30 and still basically in his prime but his best weight class was welterweight and he would be stepping up to light-H and giving up a lot of weight, and moore was a prime 38,39.

Robinson had taken maxim to school for 13 rounds until the heat robbed him. moore also months later took maxim to school.

robinson would have been stepping up once again, do u think he could have outboxed and used his speed to beat the light-H king or was moores size, power and, ring savvy too much for robinson to handle.

Very efficient of you to answer your own question. However Blocky I know that you are up to no good once again.....attempting to get me to weigh in where bias just may lead me to overstatement or passioned illogic.

Fortunately the answer was contained in your question and I can simply watch others reply and remain neutral.

This fight almost came off in the late 50s... shame it didnt happen.
I think Moore would probably have been too strong for Robinson.

Robinson, who wasnt a big middleweight, would be too small to handle Moore's strnght power and pressure. PfP he was better than Moore mostly for how he dominated as a welterwieght, but the second greatest lightheavy of all time would have been too much for him.

i think theone was right here... if your judging p4p greatness then SRR wins easily, but SRR was a middleweight and moore was more of a light heavyweight. their both great boxers, and i think it would be a great fight but as it has been stressed already, moore would be too big and powerful for srr.

I'm not disputing Rays greatness but I don't think there is that much between him and Moore p4p. Remember Moore only got his break when he was already 36/or39.... had he been given a shot earlier he may well have been a world champion as early as the mid-40s at Lightheavy or even Middleweight. Personally I think Moore and Ray are pretty close p4p and had Moore got the breaks earlier in his career he would probably have built up an even more impressive record.

moore would win by stoppage imo.srr may be able to keep away for a few rounds but my guess is somewhere round about 8 or 9 moore catches up with him.

Actually silov i think SRR was substantially better than Moore in their prime. Both fighers we dominant and beat great fighters but moore also lost his share of fights to these fighter and too some other fighters who were not on his level.
Robinson only blemishes was a decision loss to prime hall of famer Jake Lamotta, who out weighed him by 16 pounds, and a draw with tough contender Jose Bosora.

..if the fight would have come off when it was being talked about, moore would have broken sugar ray in half......i think the sugarman was the greatest fighter ever, but at this time in their careers archie was much too strong.....and srr knew it. it was mostly publicity talk. no way robinson would have been able to land all thoe punches on moore as he did with maxim. archie's forearms could cover his head and chest and he could somehow punch from that same position. robby was not an infighter either, so i don't know what kind of an attack he would have had.

I totally agree Jaclem. in a head to head bout its moore all the way. But p4p Ray is the easy choice.

But Moore fought a lot of guys that other fighters including Robinson wouldn't fight like Burley, and Williams as well as Charles and Bivins etc... thats why he wasn't undefeated.

Charles and Bivins were way too big at the time for Robinson to fight. Holman williams was just about done when Robinson became a full fledge middle weight. why he never fought Burley I dont know.
Dont forget however that Moore still wouldnt be underfeated if it weretn for the guys you mentioned above. Fighters like Shorty Houge Jack Chase,Aaron Wade and others also defeated him.

I'm not saying Robinson should have fought Charles and Bivins but I'm pointing out the wide competition that Moore fought and the fact that he fought all the fighters from middle to Heavyweight that others avoided.
P4P I don't think there was that much between Moore and Robinson.

I see your point silkov. It would be silly for me to nit pick the great Archie Moores career just to try and prove how a little more than slightly better Robinson was.
