I bet your all excited about this one.

However in 1989 this fight very nearly happened when Francesco Damiani was the European Heavyweight Champion and unbeaten British Heavyweight Champion Gary Mason was his leading contender,

But instead Francesco Damiani relinquished his title in order to fight Johnny DuPlooy for the newly created WBO Heavyweight Title, which he of course won, with relative ease.

Francesco Damiani was an outstanding amateur but still to a large extent still boxed like one as a professional. He was a upright boxer type, with average power but reasonable skills and mobility.

Mason I always think is a little underated as he lived in the shadow of Frank Bruno and later Lennox Lewis (the only man to beat him). Mason was as strong as an ox, with good power but was very slow and poderous at times with less than great stamina.

If they had fought in 1989 both had met and beaten a very simular array of imported Journeymen and former contenders etc as professionals although Damiani had a much longer and more succssesfull amateur career.

Would Mason be too strong and durable for the Italian? Or would Damiani outfox and box his was to a points victory.

What do you thing fight fans? :box:

It's a good match up. I imagine Damiani to asically outwork Gary. Sometime in the fight Mason will catch Damiani and how damiani takes these shots will determinw the outcome. I can see mason's big punches swining the momentum his way.

I think Damiani comfortably outboxes Mason till about the 9th. Then Mason catches him and its all over.
