You know, that's damn curious... I'd never even thought of this but BH somehow seemed to look different than I remember him looking a few years ago. And now that you mention it, he is starting to look like a smaller thinner version of Holmes @ age 38, when he first started wearing glasses.

Not only do they look alike, they both had similar careers.

They also will say or do anything without thinking twice.

They both had some undefeated underdog come and ruin their reign when they were about to retire.

Perhaps Bernard is Larrys long lost first born!??? :o .

Seriously though I can see a simularity in that they are both quite quiet guys outside the ring and don't seem comfortable talking themselves up.

I think Hpkins and Hagler had simuliar careers I dont know about Holmes though, I dont see either Holmes or Hopkins as quiet either, they both didnt have a problem tooting their own horns...Holmes made the famous comment about Marciano not being able to hold his jock strap and Hopkins always has something crazy to say b4 a big fight, remember the comments he made about Taylors brother that commit suicide and the throwing of the Puerto Rican flag b4 the trinidad fight..so they both didnt have a problem bringing attention to themselves.

They can do the talk when they want but I don't think they're really comfortable with that. I know that Holmes is really naturally quite a reseved person and Hopkins seems the same.

At a press conference Holmes also said that if Gerry Cooney had been there he would've punched him in the mouth.

They both were big shit talkers.

I don't blame Holmes saying what he did after all the badmouthing and messing around he had to put up with from Cooneys camp and certain sections of the media who were out and out hoping for Cooney to win.
The way Larry was treated in the run up to the Cooney fight was a disgrace.

Yeah Don King and that other guy tried to turn a championship fight into some kind of race battle.

There was a very strong racial undertone to the fight which wasn't Cooneys or Holmes fault but mainly the management and promoters, but also the media. Much of the media sided with Cooney and predicted he would beat Holmes and even said how the heavyweight championship and boxing itself needed Cooney to win. I've always thought that Holmes was deeply hurt by all this and if you followed him at the time you can see that after the Cooney fight he became much more techty and even bitter especially with the media... whereas before he had been more relaxed and easygoing.

Unfortunately I don't think the race element of the sport will ever go away, as distateful as it is.

Would boxing become a more popular sport if there was a truly great white American HW champion?

Holmes was always undervalued by the media and by the casual fan. I think the Cooney fight made him realise that white HWs got treated differently. I saw him in an interview talkig about how if he'd have been white he'd have been playing Superman in Hollywood on retirement.

Imagine if there was a white USA heavyweight that had the awe and talent of a prime Tyson...whew, boxing might be more popular than football.

They didnt even introduce Holmes last right b4 the fight, which is what they normally do when you are the champ. No respect.

Yes, that was disgraceful!. Holmes really was treated like the challenger in that fight.

Imagine of Holmes was white with the record he has, how differently would he be percieved?. I think a lot more people would be saying he was one of the all time greats.
And with respect would Marciano have had as much written and said about him if he had been black?. I don't think so.
