Rubin Carter scored a huge win in the Civic Arena, Pittsburgh in 1963 when he stopped Future Multi-weight Champion Emile Griffith in just one round. This was in my opinion Carters best professional result.

Having said that if this fight had never happened I would have strongly favoured Emile Griffith to outpoint Carter as I feel Griffith was a much better fighter. But the fight DID happen, and the result is there for all to see with no argument.

But I have often wondered what would have happened if there had been a rematch within about 12 months?

Did Carter just have the size, power and style to always beat Emile Griffith? Or would Emile Griffith have the mental strength to forget the first fight and the Boxing ability to beat Carter given a second chance?

I favoure the latter on points. But do you agree fight fans?

I have always figured that Carter caught Emile cold; is there tape of this fight? I think that Griffith would've won the other 999 times if they had 1,000 fights against one another.

Yes.

..saw the fight on live tv...haven't seen it on tape since. it was an explosive kayo.... and carter should get credit for it. a fighter of griffiths's ability and experience should not get caught cold. but...he did. i think in a rematch griffith would have beaten him and over all emile was by far the superior fighter.

Carter's KO1 victory over Griffith was in all probability a fluke. Everything else they did in the respective careers supports that, and I would have to see Carter win a rematch between the two for me ever to believe otherwise.
I believe Griffith would have beaten Carter in a rematch, and a rubbermatch too if that was the case.
I feel Carter is vastly ovverrated due to his incredible lifestory. The film on him is a Hollywood version of his career if I ever saw one.
