Top Welsh prospect Gavin Rees is set to make his ring return after a year-long absence enforced by the British Boxing Board of Control.

Rees had his licence suspended after an incident saw him dragged before the courts – but is poised to have it handed back at the start of November.

And it means Newbridge lightweight Rees will be free to pursue his dream of becoming a British champion.

The 24-year-old is undefeated in 22 outings (12) and is a former WBO Intercontinental featherweight champion and WBO number one super-featherweight contender.

With age on his side he will be determined to make up for lost time, and has been training at Enzo Calzaghe’s Newbridge gym.

His long-term trainer believes Rees should never have been banned in the first place and the BBBC’s decision was an over-reaction

An interesting addition to the lightweights, what with Murray , Thaxton and Burns there as well.
Not sure that Gavin was the most popular boxer on this forum, remember a few people didn't like his attitude.
If he gets himself together and fights regular he has the ability to win the british title.

I only remember seeing him fight once and he was dropped by Carl Allen so i am not so sure how far he can go to be honest.

Missed out on a bit of an opportunity versus the overated Anchondo(sp?). Gives the impression he's not too dedicated to his sport, though I can only say that from the outside - hopefully someone who knows him could confirm or deny.

I saw him wandering around ringside at the Cardiff castle Calzaghe bill, and was amazed by how short he is...and I think there was talk about a fight with the 6 foot Corrales wasn't there - which would've been a bizzare sight.

Still, he looks rock hard, and carries a decent punch too. What trouble was he in with the law then? Pub brawl or something like that?

Think I've got Corrales vs. John Brown somewhere.

I've seen Rees a few times. He's a good British level, maybe European level, fighter with good skills and decent punch. His lack of height could be a problem in the lightweights and his punch won't carry such effect either. Can't really see him doing much at lightweight; hope he proves me wrong and goes a long way.

A match up with Dean Phillips with the Welsh or Celtic title on the line would be a good fight.

Both have Muya as a common opponent recently

Would be an excellent fight

In Wales would surely get a good crowd, maybe with McDermott/Gammer as well.
