LIMOND: I'LL BEAT GOMEZ FOR SCOTS

GLASGOW'S Willie Limond will be out to restore some national pride when he fights Mancunian Michael Gomez for the Commonwealth super-featherweight title at the city's Kelvin Hall.

Gomez has already beaten Tartan trio Alex Arthur, Craig Docherty and Ian McLeod but Limond is determined to exact revenge.

However, the 26-year-old reckons his biggest worry could be persuading his mates to support the right man on the night.

Limond said: "All my fans love Gomez because he beat Arthur right after he beat me. When I fought on Arthur's undercard last December Gomez was at ringside and all my friends were chanting his name. I think I'll need to remind the Glasgow punters who to support.

"I want to be the first Scot to beat Gomez. Some people might think he's washed up because he was stopped by Javier Alvarez earlier this year but he's only 28 and not finished by a long way.

"He'll get plenty of respect from me. I'll be training my backside off.

"My manager allegedly said he didn't think Gomez would be able to make the weight but he's had plenty of time to come down"

I wonder when this is taking place as I see they don't have a date marked down for it.
IF Gomez can still do the weight ok then I think he'll be too physically strong for Limond and stop him late on but he could be playing catch up as Limond is a nice enough mover & could steal a few early rounds with some neat boxing but Gomez will come through in the end.

I would be very surprised if Gomez can make Super-Featherweight anymore. But he might force himself for a good payday I suppose he doesn't seem to be getting many offers these days.

This fight all depends on how strong Gomez is at 9st4lbs these days. Gomez at 95% would be too strong for Limond but anything less then the longer the fight goes I can see the Glasgow fighter out-boxing him.

Agreed, though I also can see what Barryboy is saying with Gomez coming through in the end. Limond will need to be really fit for the last rounds, but he has a habit of mixing it up and that could take it's toll in a Gomez fight. Limond has a chance though.

The pressure is very much on Gomez. If he loses this one that would really put one of his feet in the grave. He's got no excuses if he turns up shot to pieces because he's struggled making the weight - he's said he can, and he's obviously after the AA rematch, which I'd think he'd get if he comes through this.

Does this mean Arhtur is going to have to sit around waiting for the winner of this one then? No obvious voluntaries I can think of he could get.

If this is for the Comm title, has Arthur dropped the British title as well, like he said he would?

I fancy Gomez would wipe the floor with Limmond.

Touigh one for Gomez - he would struggle to make the weight and would have to contend with Limond's sharp counter punching.

Why bother with this - why not have a straight Gomez-Arthur rematch? Its the one we all want to see!

Makes you wonder why he said he'd be coming back at SF in the first place - and all that about fighting Limmond too. Maybe he thought he could, but then started training and the penny dropped (into the till at Greggs)

"Michael Gomez has confirmed that he will now fight at lightweight - despite earlier suggestions he would give it another shot at super-feather.
A former British champion at nine stone four pounds, Gomez will now look to add a Lonsdale belt at lightweight to his collection.

He was supposed to box this week in Preston, but pulled out of a proposed eight round fight with 'flu.

Now he is hoping to appear on the December 10 show in London.

"I'd love to fight Alex Arthur at lightweight," said Gomez. "He is big at super-featherweight and I don't know how long he can keep making the weight. He's running scared of me though.

"There's some great fights out there at lightweight. I think the one everyone wants to see is me against Steve Murray. It would only last three rounds because one of us is going to get knocked out!

"I'd beat (current British champion) Graham Earl no problems, and I'd do a job on Kevin Bennett as well."

Murray vs Gomez could be very exciting whilst it lasts, assuming Gomez by moving up in weight can recapture some of his old form.
