Weight issues.

In light of last weeks fights, what do you think should be done about weigh ins. You might be happy with the current system, but I think the current system is flawed and all you have to do is ask Joey Gamache and also Demarcus Corely what is it like to fight a guy over a stone heavier than you in a supposed non-catch weight affair.

Now, I don't think on the day weigh in alone is the answer, we KNOW the effects of dehydration on the boxer and a few hours isn't the enough time to replenish the fluids. However, there are simple devices now that can test ones hydration level (percentage of water in the body). Now this is what I think should be added to weigh in. If a fighter doesn't show an accepted hydration level - then the fight is off, simple as. You can then have on the day weigh ins.

The one problem with this though, is if the fighter fails the hydration test then it would leave a lot of unhappy punters who might have paid in excess of a grand to watch the fight (and cannot get the flights refunded) - so not sure how you can stop that from happening. Maybe this co-inciding with gradual weigh ins/hydration tests during the build up - so if it looks unlikely, the fight gets postponed (or arranged as a catchweight).

I also think a 2 minute break between rounds and also the use of isotonic drinks during the rounds should be implemented.

Stu whatever measures are brought in there will always be some who will abuse/bend the rules. Bring back weighins on the day, we still sadly have injurys now. Watch every champ go up two divisions if we bring back on the day weights, as for 2 minute rounds, i think we should leave it as is. Our sport is fucked about enough already ( cotton wool next where do we stop)

I agree with Stu that something needs to be done, having fighters put on that much weight between weigh in and fight time isn't fair and can't be healthy.

It would totally revolutionise boxing and won't happen, but surely the fairest way to do it is to have both fighters at their fighting weeght when they enter the ring, with a few weigh-ins in the day on the build up to the fight

I like the multpiple weigh-ins idea. I'd like limits for weight say tw oweeks, one week, then 4, 3, 2 and 1 day before (1 day being weigh-in) and then a couple of hours before fight time. This is a tremendous hoo-ha and impractical in many cases but it wouls be such a kerfuffle that people would be forced to do weight properly.

Practically I can only see it working for bigger fights, though.
