Well I`ve whinged about it for a long, long time and always been compelled to buy it every Friday.
But not any more.

It really is taking the piss, the price isn`t a factor as such but when they up the price and promise to make it worth it ..and don`t then its taking the piss.

I counted up the actual pages to read in todays and when you take out the adds and the huge amount of photo`s they fill it with there is barely 24pages to read.

Now take a look at BN from about 10yrs ago and you will see what I mean about more pics and less actual news.

Thats it for me, no more BN.
This time I mean it..its like a childs boxing mag now..full of pictures and the endless Ali stories we have all heard a billion times.

If I want to read a boxing mag from now on it will have to be the Ring, BN have totally lost it, sad days :(

exactly, he wrote a piece a few months ago, i think it was involving a boxer from New Zealand, that i found really offensive.
I know i hear worse at work and in the pub, but when a guy is paid to write about boxing he doesn't need to stoop to what is near enough a racist slur

Stopped buying it after the last piss poor xmas rip off ten months ago. Longest time Ive ever not bought it.

Boxing News/ Boxing Monthly or whatever has had its day now. Some people like buying them as collectors items.

None of them can keep up with the internet anymore. Whatever is posted in the Mags is days if not weeks old. Internet is now fast and the future of Boxing, it is also free!

I cant think of anything that the paper version can do that Internet cant do, apart from wipe your ass with it!

Infact internet can be live and interactive and World wide. You can even come to a forum like this and find the news within an hour of it being released.

Anyone who buys boxing news next friday tell me what is in it, that you dont already know from this forum or any other site including pictures.

Its sad, I loved Boxing News for a long time and would hate to see it go but I agree theyve lost the plot and it just isn't value for money now. Feels more like a pamphlet than a magazine or paper now and thsi articles are too brief with too much advertising by far!.
They don't even list upcoming fights around the country any more!!!... :x :x :x

I still think Boxing Monthly is a quality read. Its more up to date than The Ring which is always miles behind. Yeah the net is free but I find good old magazine journalism to be more detailed and thoughtfull. They also usually tell you some pretty interesting stuff from behind the scenes. Front Line Diary is always interestsing. I think it still has it's place.

boxing mothly is shit and has been for years..... the photos are good though. Boxing news, for all its weaknesses is easily the best paper in the world....

You don't do that in publishing unless your sales are healthy!

You have to audit regardless of how healthy your figures are if potential advertisers are demanding to see figures before committing.

Just look through an old BN, from say 10-15yrs ago and that was what BN should be...a trade paper that gives you BOXING NEWS, not pages and pages of adverts...recycled Ali stories....same London amateur gyms..and a ridiculous amount of photos.

And even how they have advertised the `BN exclusive Ricky Hatton DVD offer` was mis-leading, it cost exactly the same as a normal DVD...where was the offer in that??

I`ve stopped buying it once or twice before but gone back to it, not this time

yeh i like daniel herbert i prefer him i fink they should do better reports on amatuer boxing though jim brady hmm he is abit dodgey with the bait steriotypes

I try my best to bet every weeks BN (havn't got this weeks yet though :)), as its handy to have for work. Can't take my computer in to the toilets when i go for a sly ciggie.

I actually don't mind Brady that much, he doesn't rile me as much as some of you fellas. The stereotype/racial thing is true though, the other day i was reading a report and he said something along the lines of "A great right from the chocolate skinned Cruiserweight" or something like that

The strange thing is that Brady wrote some very good articles in the 80s. He seems to have got jaded and lost his enthusiasm really. In fact I'd say that BN is pretty jaded generally these days....

Brady is absolutely shite. The man can't even write, and obviously nevers gets off his arse to actualy go to fights - just watches them on the box and emails another piss poor report, full of his typical yank red neck references.
If the guys gets paid more than a fiver a week he's overpaid.

They have a problem with names. No BN writer feels comfortable repeatedly using a surname - it's always surname reference, then next time a first name reference, then a reference to his hometown ('the Droitwich fighter' or whatever). Brady spices things up with superfluous references to skin colour which pad out the text but add nothing.

If a fighter has a surname, I'm happy for them to be referred to by it. My dad read an issue of BN about 6 years ago (not a BN reader) and said it was the worst professional writing he'd ever read. I have to agree with him, the actual standard of journalism is piss-poor. Maybe they're catering to the lowest common denominator but they make The Sun read like a Booker Prize nominee.

I'm weeks behind on my Boxing News and have been for ages because I've lost enthusiasm in it. I used to read it back to front before Friday had ended not too long ago, and I've been reading Boxing News for years and years.

The standard of reporting is dropping in my opinion, the new format offers WORSE value in it's layout and they are drifting into tabloid like headlines and stories wish is terribly off-putting...BUT as someone said earlier it's still miles better than the rest of pack.

Agreed, Jim Brady is mostly crap. Hate the way he carries out witch-hunts on certain boxers and he outrageously writes-off fighters week in,week out. The time he chastised Arturo Gatti for modifying he style to that of a "boxer" made horrible reading.

There is another reporter for Boxing News who has crossed the line several times and seems to make a habit of getting up peoples noses. He needs to be policed by Abrahms somewhat.

This thread has come as really good timing for me, because as of this week I shall be stopping my newsagent supplying it to me.

As a boxing journalist myself I tend to get all the news fairly quickly anyway and really only read BN for any other snippets I may have missed for my boxing fix.

I used to look forward to collecting it every Friday at 7.00am and reading it before lunchtime. Not any more. I think it's down to the new format which really is shit.
