Witter: Lynes is underestimated

Junior Witter believes that he is in for a harder nights work than is being anticipated when he defends his British, Commonwealth and European light welterweight titles against Colin Lynes at the York Hall this Friday, (October 21st).

Whilst many fight fans believe that the Bradford switch hitter could be in for a walkover, the fighter himself has seen enough in his opponent’s recent performances to suggest that he wont have things all his own way.

“People are definitely underestimating Colin Lynes,” said Witter. “He is a good fighter, with good technical skills, a decent chin and a lot of heart.

“He has demonstrated that recently, particularly in his last fight, (a points win over American Jauquin Gallardo). Whilst some thought he was lucky to get the decision, he showed me a few things. Enough to make me think: ‘OK, I have got a fight on my hands here.’

“I will definitely win this to line up my final eliminator for the right to fight Floyd Mayweather, but I am going to have to work for it. It’s not going to be easy.”

The 31-year-old from Bradford – labelled ‘old’ by Lynes - is, however, still looking to win early, as he has done in 15 of his last 17 fights.

“Colin has had a couple of close decisions go his way, (against Gallardo and also Pablo Sarmiento last May), so I’m not going to be relying on the judges,” Witter, promoted by Hennessy Sports, added.

“I am looking at prevailing around the middle rounds, after he has dug deep. That is when I can see this so called 'old' man taking the boy to school.”

Should that scenario play out, it will be Lynes second defeat at the home of British boxing.

“Lynes has improved a hell of a lot since he lost at the York Hall to Samuel Malinga in 2003, (officially on a cut). But not enough,” Witter added. “He is going to lose there again - It is going to become his bogey venue.”

An excuse if Witter doesn't perform possibly?

I fully expect Witter to win comfortably though

I'm expecting a mid rounds stoppage win for Witter and hope he performs better than he did last time out.

this however is the day after my bday and Im out for dinner so cant attend.

A slight change of tune from "I'd have knocked out Tszyu in 5". I still expect him to have Lynes out of there before halfway though.

If not, Lynes will probably last the course, because Junior's power deteriorates in the second half.

When you see Witter with his eyes shut in the corner, usually a sign he is dead tired.

Would be good if he could prove us all wrong with a late rounds stoppage or is that hoping for too much. Would be good to see a progression from what are two very difficult fights though.

imo lynes is underestimated and i think he will win this if it goes past 7 rounds,looking forward to a great fight either way, nice to see a decent british fight at top level at the home of british boxing

I think that this fight could tell us alot about Witter.

We all know that Witter faded aginst Kotelnik & N'Dou but does he have a stamina problem or did them two 12 rounders do Witter good (remember Witter had blown all his other opponents out) before these 2 fights, maybe his body needed these 2 long distance fights to get used to doing the distance.

I honestly think the best result for Witter would be a 12 round ponits decision, then we can see how Witter looks in the later rounds again i.e. Has he learnt anything from the N'Dou & Kotelnik fights.

The more times Witter is extended the distance the better, he knows he won't be KO'ing the top level guys early if and when he gets in with them so he needs this type of experience going the long route as preperation. I think he will dispose of Lynes around seven though
