Cerdan-LaMotta rematch

Marcel Cerdan dislocated his right shoulder in the first round of his title defense against Jake LaMotta. The frenchman fought one handed for nine rounds and then quit in the 10th because of this injury. He was flying back to America for the rematch when he was killed in a crash. Who would have won the rematch?

Oh no. :o I believe last time this was brought up there was a pretty heated agrument between a few users here.

I'd personally say Cerdan. He seemed to be entering his peak while LaMotta was exiting his.

Cerdan definatly had the more impressive record, although it looks like the first part of his career he fought a lot of guys with not much expirience.

I disagree with this. LaMotta's quality of oppisition was alot better.

I was basically going on a won lost percentage, but I did comment that he looked like he fought a lot of guys who had not fought much. Caliber of opposition does count for a great deal. Just by the Ray Robinson fights alone you could say that Lamotta fought stiff competition.

Prime vs Prime you have to go with Lamotta, However if that plane would have made it to it's destination, I think Cerdan would have evened the score. It's a matter purely of timing.

Good point.

The fight was close despite Cerdan's shoulder, I believe??

Cerdan quit? Not a term I'd use when a fighter can't continue

bollox, never sure just when that is. Rob Calloway says he did not quit when he had a broken jaw but he stopped the fight seems confusing to me, But Ali found a way. Vitali quit with a torn rotater could he have gone on? Torn Bicep? can you continue? When is it a choice and when is it not? If you say you can't go on shouldnt it be a KO?

Just being thoughtful because I honestly don't know.

Each injury is different and only the individual knows how bad (or otherwise) his particular injuries are. Never have liked the term when applied to a fighter and never will. It suggests some degree of cowardice :x

Most likely those are incomplete records. Not saying his level of competition was as good as LaMotta's, just that many of Cerdan's opponents records are probably not complete on BoxRec.

..cerdan did not dislocate his shoulder. lamotta dislocated cerdan's shoulder. lamotta had two busted knuckles in his hand...forget which one...nat fleischer felt the injuries equalled each other out.

cerdan was a good fighter bnut lamotta was too strong and too good overall and would have beat him again in the rematch.

Fritzie was only 30 when he fought LaMotta -4 times in 6 months, out weighed 10-15 pounds each time and all 4 going to split decisions- but he did have 23 of 64 losses after those fights.
I don't know that Cerdan was better but he was a year younger than LaMotta and he hadn't fought Robinson 5 times, Zivic 4 times, tough Jose Basora four times, Lloyd Marshall, Bert Lytell, Tommy Bell 3 times, Holman Williams, Bob Satterfield, Jimmy Edgar, Tommy Yarosz, and a gang of other tough guys.
