Any ideas what this EBA title that Danny Thorton is fighting for at the weekend. Does this mean there is going to be two European champions, or is this a third official EBU belt (with the European and the EBU-EU belt).

I believe it's affiliated to the WBA, their European arm. Sort of a WBA International title.

So that would make it completely worthless then.

EBA= WBA International (Not WBA Inter-Contineltal that Valuev, Abraham ect have)
There is also a EBF european title but EBU fighters cant fight for that belt. EBU fighters can fight for the EBA belt.

I thought the EBA was basically the new name for the WBA international title, which is what Freiheit is saying.

I thought though, that the WBA international was just the new term for the WBA intercontinental title, and that the two names were just interchangeable because few had grasped the new name properly.

So were the WBA international and WBA intercontinental two different titles then Freiheit?

Do the IBF and WBO have similar things going on then? This may explain why Vrchis and Dimitrenko seem to have held the same title at the same time, and someone's just got the wording wrong for one of them

WBA international was run the the european WBA (EBA) located in Spain (also called CBA at one point). They started to call their titles european titles. EBU didnt like that so they complained to WBA. Then there was some discussions that I dont know that much about. It ended up with WBA creating the WBA intercontineltal title which can be fourght for around the world, and the EBA title which can only be fourght for in Europe (and maybe Africa). In the agreement between WBA, EBA and EBU it says that the EBA title is "lower" that the EBU titles.
The EBF titles are for fighters in "Pirate federations" like GBA (german boxing ass.) in Germany.

:TU: Cheers. That also explains something I asked in the past, when I wondered what the CBA title was that Howard Eastman fought for a couple of times

I was hoping it was a new title, we need more of those things after all don't we? How have we survived thus far without this bauble

As I remember the IBF tried something similar 10-15 years ago... luckily it failed.

I was going to say I think Europe gets off relatively lightly with the vast array of titles even the major bodies give out - Mundo hispano, asia-pacific, pan-whatever etc.

Having said that, I've just on the off chance discovered an IBF Eastern Europe and Central Asia title. Is that not pushing it a bit?

How about the IBF (insert postcode here) title?

There is also IBF International (They also have an interContineltal) and IBF Meditarenian (spell) title.

Fighters who holds a EBA title will not be rated by EBU.

On the subject of alphabet bodies (i know Jomo is an expert in this field) i was wondeing if the following combinations had been used up:

WBI - The World Boxing Institution perhaps?

WBD - How about the World Boxing Democracy

WBG - World Boxing Group, simple but effective

It's such a shame if they haven't, i mean there are perfectly good letters going to waste here people

I'm glad you raised this Steve, this is a subject requireing immediate neglect.

It's a subject I've thought long and hard about it. I was concentrating on changing the first name - away from the overused world, international, global or universal - but I'm in a rut to be honest. Galactical has the same initial as global, planetary is a possibility but I'm not overly fond of it. Pandemic?

I'm liking you suggestions tho.

There was one called World Boxing Institute, which is probably now defunct but you never can tell. But the Democracy and the Group I'm liking.

Others trying to break the mould are UNIBOX, a mysterious sanctioning body which, according to google, is heavily involved in the plastics industry.

I'm liking the imaginative Spanish body, the TWBA, who decided they'd put a 'transcontinental' in front of world boxing association - just in case people didn't know what world means.

There's also the world tournament boxing federation (endearingly termed the WTBF), which has a website that appears to be of the Polish language, although when you press the skip intro button it sometimes goes to a porn site. Plus it's address is given as the British Virgin Islands. TRUST IT, it's just a regular sanctioning body.

Personally, I'd say they're a useful enough trinket within the org. you're trying to get a title with ie. WBC - Sam with the International title; Valuev with the intercontinental title. Although it really should be the opponent your beating that should decide the rankings, I'm sure the respective bodies don't mind getting paid for giving out a belt in return for a ratings boost. But as a title in itself, well, how many ex-boxers have you heard of who proudly state "I retired undefeated WBO Intercontinental champion."

Cheers for the input Jomo, it would be funnier if it wasn't so pathetically true :D I sent an e mail back to the WBE nominating my friend Marcus for the Euro title but alas they rumbled me and the title tilt is off :TU:

Another pedantic one for you Freiheit, or anyone who gives a fig.

The OPBF - Is this independant? Like the NABC in the US? I'm also guessing it stands for oceanic/pacific? Why does Okhello have the heavyweight version then, is elligability for it residency based?

Posted: 03 Nov 2005, 07:33
by Freiheit
OPBF is a WBC federation. Okhello lives in Japan.

Ok, thanks. I should have thought about it. It makes sense, as there's no other WBC title for the sort of region.

NABF
CABOFE
Fecarbox
Fesubox

Yet again, have to apologise for dragging this up again. Freiheit must feel like George Bush has just asked him what the capital of the USA again is every time I open my mouth.

But, more of a rant this one.

On Thursday, there was a fight in Korea for the PABA (WBA affiliate) super bantam title.

Now, I know super bantam weight isn't the largest in the world, and that being a regional title that also puts a limt on elligible fighters.

BUT this title was being fought for between two fighters with records of 7-9 and 1-4. With all due respect to these boxers, can this sort of fight being given a relatively major WBA title really carry any hint of credence whatsoever?
