Sylvester Mittee.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY 
Anyone know what the former British Light-Welterweight & British and Commenwealth Welterweight Champion is up to these days?
Any memories, pictures to upload or opinions on this former Champion?

I only really remember his fight with Lloyd Honeygan. I think it was deemed to be quite an even money fight in the build up and Mittee gave Lloyd an argument before subcumming in the middle rounds.
Less than a year later Lloyd was sitting on top of the world after beating Don Curry so Mitteemust have been pretty handy.

Excellent fighter, just short of world class - good chin and a good puncher too from what I remember. He was a bit like an early version of Eubank in terms of personality: slightly eccentric character, who fancied himself as a bit of a philosopher and a poet - which drew at lot of blank looks and raised eyebrows in boxing circles of course.
Had some real wars in his time, going on memory, I think his fight with Clinton McKenzie ( the UK's very own Arturo Gatti ) was fight of the year - over 15 rounds too.
Hit his stride after that, and reeled off a great sequence of wins for the British title. But then met his nemesis in a big grudge match - Lloyd Honeyghan. It was a sort of mini Benn/Eubank in terms of personalities - insults flying and bad feeling all round.
Lloyd proved himself world class that night though, and Sylvester was never to hit the heights again. Another British welterweight great beat him a few years later, Kirk Laing.

I remember he was a really bright guy.... but have some memory that he had a breakdown or depression a few years ago....
Hope he is better if so.

I read a while back that he suffers from bipolar disorder (manic depression) the same condition that Frank Bruno has........
He was always a good fighter, I enjoyed watching his fights... he was a little unlucky to be around at the same time as Laing and Honeyghan.

Many happy returns Sly!!
I went to what turned out to be his last pro fight at the Lewisham theatre
and was very impressed with him brushing Rob Thomas aside in two rounds. Was hoping to see more of him but it wasn't to be and he eventually retired.
Quality boxer.

Today I am mostly cursing my lack of technological know how. I have a decent pic of me and Sylvester (decent of him anyway) taken when I met him at the Board's do. fornicate knows how to get it on here.
Mr Mittee was indeed eccentric and I got him to recite me a poem which he did - an excellent performance of a poem about a cockerel.
Top man and a bloody good fighter too

Just had a look on the British Library catalogue and couldn't find anything. By the way, if anyone knows how to get a pic on here, PM me their email address and I'll send them it to do the business. As aforementioned, the only downside is it has me on it too!
