Sounds like former WBO Super Featherweight champion, Barry Jones, is coming back at 31 years of age.

Apparently been training in a gym by Twickenham.

Not sure what to think, would be a useful addition to the Super Featherweights.

Jones vs Arthur would have an appeal - if it was the Jones of old.

he should stay retired frankly. Not sure there are that may good paydays...

I was always a fan of Jones, his knockdown of Freitas should be in the hall of fame .

For a man with little power he had a very good career, although he was fortunate to win the WBO title. Unfortunately at 31 his box and move style may not be as effective as it was, But if he gets a good payday good luck to him 8) .

Is he intending to comeback at Super-Featherweight though?

Didn't he have some medical problems though?. If thats the case he should probably stay retired.

Something to do with a brain scan result, but he got a second opinion (I think) and boxed on.

You must be right because from reports that I've read Jones failed a brain scan in April 1998 but went on to fight twice after this.

I've met Barry at several boxing shows over the last 2/3 years and physically he always looks in good shape and is a really nice guy. However, at 31 and out of the ring for almost 6 years, personally I wouldn't like to see him make a comeback. As it stands we can remember him as a world champion.........

Thats long link is too the full article, which does go into his medical issues. This is what Jones says about his health issues.

But before his first defence, Jones had his licence withdrawn following a query over his brain scan and it took several months before the Board were persuaded to restore it, by which time he'd been stripped of the title.


The WBO retained him as mandatory challenger, but when he challenged the fearsome Brazilian, Acelino Freitas, at Doncaster in January 2000, he was floored six times and pulled out after eight rounds.


That was his last bout.


Jones is confident there will be no problem over renewing his licence.


'Remember, I never failed a brain scan,' he stressed.


'They found a slight gap in the membrane and nobody knew what it meant, so they suspended me while they looked into it.


'When top surgeon Peter Richards said that I was under no more danger than any other boxer in the country, they gave me my licence back and nothing has changed from that.'


Jones, like any other would-be pro boxer, will have to undergo a full medical, including an MRI scan, before the Board rule on any application.

If the brain scan wasn't a factor, why did he retire so young (25?) ?
Was it the beating he took from Freitas that made him decide to walk away ?

It was a confusing one, he kept saying he was to return for a while after the Freitas fight - speaking in the WABA's the following May he said that he had planned to return but Freitas had broken a couple of his ribs which took time to heal.

Said this for a few more televised events in Wales - next thing was the Freitas vs Casamayor fight and Jones looking a bit bigger annoucning his retirement, and Barry McGuigan applauding it.

At the time I thought it was a combination of the doubt with his health, the pain he endured vs Freitas and maybe the relisation that he had achieved the highest accolade that he would probably achieve.

Maybe thinks with most of his generation at Lightweight and above, there is one or two weaker champions. Remember he was a very small Super Featherweight so will probably still make that weight.

Any news on the rumoured Jon Jo Irwin comeback?

He manages a pub in Twickenham (can't remember the name). It's the same pub that was run by Eddie Avoth years ago. The pub is now owned by Wally Angliss another ex-pro fighter.

Wasn't he working with Danny Williams' trainer Jim McDonnell for a bit?
