Barerra going for history.

Its a long way off put it looks like Marco Antionio Barerra will challenge Jesus Chavez for the IBF Lightweight title, next March.
Interesting fight this, Barerra has said in recent interviews that he can make Featherweight easy and even could probably still make Super Bantam. I hope he doesn't come a croper stepping it up that one weight to much and attempt to be the first Mexican to win a world title at 4 different weights.
I think he will be just that little bit too good for Jesus Chavez, although in interviews it does sound like Chavez is now fighting for two people, himself and the memory of Levander Johnson. However, I said the same things about Morales vs Raheem. I didn't think the Lightweight limit would adversely affect Morales cause he was fighting a small Super Feather in Raheem, its a similar scenerio here - so probably Bareera would be advised to fight at Super Feather and just were heavy clothing at the weigh in.

i love barerra but i hate all this weight hopping for no good rerason.
fight the best at superfeather / feather stop the weight hopping its pathetic. Its a cancer on the sport.
im just a traditionalist when it comes to this but in fact MAB fighting Chavez instead of fighting Marquez/ Chi / Pac / Morales or even harrison.
this proves nothing to me Im afriad.

I agree, plenty of good fights around at his own weight.

A little bit harsh, Chavez is no bum. He gave Morales one tough fight and but for injury who knows.
Chavez would beat Harrison and possibly Chi.

its nto the opponent stu its my utter contempt for those who move up in weight when you havent cleaned the division out.
hence you will neve rfind me heraleding the lieks of mayweather de la hoya etc. Great skills but prov it aginast the best in the division not against a someone not as good a division up.
just my take fella!

Chavez has only fought at 135 once and won the IBF fair enough, but only because he escaped a hot 130 division. Barrera has a couple of belts at 130 and makes the weight easily so why is he chasing Chavez? I think you are right J it's just one for the multi-weight record books

No ones really going to consider MAB the champ at 135 if he beats Charvez while Corrales/Castillo(ok hes moved up)/Casa/Raheem/etc are around. All the same this will be a top fight - Charvez gave Morales a closish fight with 1arm.
You have to wonder if Charvez will have been ruined by the Levander fight - Eubank never seemed to go for the KO after Watson imo, BEnn was never the same after McCellan.
HEs obviously been given weight hoping tips from manager Delahoya.
Imagine a Barrera-Corrales fight - logic tells us Corrales will pummell Barrera - but boxers do well against Corrales - so maybe Barrera can outbox Corrales for 12 rounds.

So what, Barrera just forgetting about a certain Filipino who kicked his ass?? Does that bode well for the history books??

I agree that it would be better for a fighter to clear up a division first, but i cannot agree about De La Hoya , he has always fought the best in each division he's fought in. In the case of Super Feather it was the fact that he outgrew the division, not a case of jumping up a weight for the sake of it.
At lightweight De La Hoya fought Ruelas, Hernandez, Leija and Molina .
Light Welter he took out Chavez and Angel Gonzalez both the best in that division.
Welter he beat Rivera, Quartey and lost to Trinidad and Mosley again the best in the division.

Apart from winning titles in multiple divisions, I don't see why Barrera would want to fight Chavez. Morales already beat him by a wide margin on the scorecards so Barrera would be expected by many to beat him. He won't get too many props if he wins but Chavez is a dangerous opponent.

Good points J, i made them myself while discussing Mayweather recently, unless you are tight at the weight then it is understandable but why the constant weight hopping otherwise unless there is nothing left at your current weight class? Up and down side to side back and forth, it's stupid if you ask me. All this "Trying to be a five weight world champion" or whatever doesn't wash either, it doesn't mean so much these days as when the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson were doing it, you don't even have to swap weights and beat the best guys anymore. I could be a five weight "World" champion

agreed steve plus when Sugar ray tried to do it, it was welter - middle - up to light heavy as well.
no light/super divisions as a stepping stone,

I don't like weight hopping either BUT Barrera v Chavez would be a very very good fight to look forward to, I certainly wouldn't have a problem with it unlike Hopkins v Tarver, Mayweather v Wright and other such daft ideas.

J - I take your points on board about the weight hopping thing.
I remember Naz used to get crucified for not going to 130 or 135 yet I woul argue that he pretty much beat all the featherweights going including the belt holders
yes, before anyone corrects me with MAB and morales and marquez bla bla bla the point I am making is that why does Naz get a slagging off for staying at 126 whereas others are now saying on here its a good thing to stay at the same weight.
I think it depends on the indvidual, the likes of Oscar and Floyd are tall and the sort who could handle moving up, Morales another one. Naz and fighters of that ilk I believe are better suited to staying put (don't forget Naz won titles at 118 and 122).
Depends on the individual - no right and wrong for me
