Question on Juan Manuel Marquez's rep.. (controversial!)

I know its popular, accepted knowledge across the net/media that JMM is this super dangerous, avoided featherweight beast who'd surely be a legend if only people wouldn't run from him, but... does anyone else think, with signature results being a draw against Pacman, a W over Smoke Gainer (*cough* hype job *cough*) and a loss to Freddie Norwood*, that if JMM was say French, or English even, and only fought in Europe, he'd still have the same 'avoided legend' rep with the boxing/american fans and press ??

*haven't seen the Norwood fight but recall reading it was a controversial...

Well more recently, look how easily he dealt with Polo, and look at how much trouble Harrison had with him.

hmm possibly a case of Harrison's limitations though rather than JMM's brilliance?? maybe/maybe not.

I've no interest in Marquez anyway, he's one of those fighters who'll put you to sleep watching. Part of why the guy is ducked is because there's nothing to be earned financially from fighting him. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't his most recent fight cancelled because a $50,000 purse couldn't be raised?! On the subject of ducking, I'm pretty sure Marquez had an opportunity to fight Naz and make a household name of himself, but he chose not to.

JMM is the real deal in my eyes - a superlative boxer - he puts people to sleep (bores them) because he can win a fight as he please in most cases and rarely lets it all hang out like an early MAB or Erik Morales do.

I dont think his rivals are avoiding him as such, it more a case of him being a realively minor draw card and therefore not being worth the large associated risk. Shame cause he really can fight.

His manager/trainer has destroyed his relationship with Arum and is making it difficult for JMM to get work. A match with the winner of Morales/Pac Man would be ideal for him.

JMM hasn't got the sharpest people advising him IMO.
he turned down $700,000 to fight Pac-man , and is now going to fight Chris John for $70,000 in John's backyard in Indonesia.

Its a fight you can see JMM losing if it goes to a tight decision

I had JMM beating Pac but only watched it once. He turned down Pac in a rematch in fairness to his been avoided claims. Its all about risk reward - a big risk and no reward - unknown outside the hardcore, little excitement, tricky and even if you win you won't look good. He is good but is basically the Winky Wright of the featherweights.

I actually like Marquez, i was there when he mesmerized Salido :D He had better be prepared to fight when he takes on Chris John though, i have seen John fight a couple of times and he won't stop throwing punches the guy is relentless.

As for the Naz/Marquez situation i don't know the ins and outs of the whole scenario but i heard Naz ducked JMM. Six of one half a dozen of the other perhaps?

I like Marquez as well, he might seem boring, but the bloke is quality.

As for Naz-JMM, no less an authority than JohnShep mentioned earlier this year, on the Current Scene, that Marquez was offered the fight, and turned it down. Mr Shep was asked for his source, and he pointed out the fact that he was the one who phoned JMM's people with the offer, so there you go. I'll try and find the thread....
