Maxie Rosenbloom

How about this lightheavyweight great??? Why nobody talks about him???
He beat pretty good opposition in his career and held the title for 4 years. Also had registered over 200 wins, but only 19 KOs.
Let's talk about this guy, shall we???

Maxie was Slapsie
In all seriousness he is one of the true great fighters of all-time. If he had any power whatsoever, he could have been greater than even Willie Pep or Sugar Ray IMO. Definitely one of the most intelligent fighters to ever step through the ropes. It's a shame his name isn't mentioned more nowadays. He's kind of like the George Sisler of boxing.

Rosenbloom was one of the not too many white fighters that barred absolutely no one as he beat some of the best boxer of his era, white and black. A true all-time great!

I just scanned over Rosenblooms record and it is absolutely incredible and possibly the best record ever when it comes to total number of quality opposition faced. Hell, just imagine what he would have been like if he had carried a heavy punch!

Jack Sharkey? That was more to do with Johnny Buckley and some of the moustache-petes behind him than Jack. Time and again he popped up to get big fights that others might have had more of a right to. He saw there was good money in losing to Carnera, Loughlin, Louis, etc.

A black fighter named James "Cannonball" Green
fought Maxie Rosenbloom to a draw in a six-round
bout in Ventura, California during the middle
1930s. Green went on to be a Los Angeles-based
trainer. There was a story about Green being
asked about one of his fighters who quit during
a bout. Green replied, "He's got a fever.....yellow
fever!"

In regards to Maxie Rosenbloom's record, I think that there
are some unrecorded bouts of his out there. Even after
becoming a top fighter, Rosenbloom would fight in some
very obscure venues. I myself discovered at least one of
his bouts (with Harold "Millionaire" Murphy) that took place
in Ventura, California.

I do not understand, why The Ring Magazine did not include this guy as one of the 80 best fighters of the last 80 years. It is very disturbing not to include someone like Rosenbloom, not even in the top 80???
Could he be a top 50 great???

Agree. Rosenbloom deserves far more attention than he gets today. I cannot think of any other reason for him not getting this than his low KO percentage. Very sad.
Some quick Rosenbloom facts:
According to THe Boxing Register, IBHOF's official record book, Rosenbloom engaged in 299 bouts, from which his record reads 210-38-26-23 ND-2 NC (19 KO).
Rosenbloom defended his light-heavyweight title seven times. As mentioned in an above post, his level of opposition was outstanding.
Slapsie Maxie was known to get into the ring with anyone who was willing and once asked Joe Louis to get in the ring with him. Louis refused claiming Rosenbloom would make him look too bad.
Here's a thought; if Rosenbloom had had a 50-60% KO ratio, people would be mentioning him in the same sentence as Harry Greb and Benny Leonard.
I belive most of us have underrated him solely by his lack of punch. He was indeed a great, great fighter.
