Who had the most fights before they got a shot at the World title? Checking through the records Marciano and Chavez had 40 odd fights before they won the World Title.

Marvin Hagler had to wait until his 50th fight before he was allowed a title shot. And even then he was robbed against Vito Antuofermo.

Archie Moore fought several years before he got a shot!

...i'm not going to count them up on boxrec because i have drops in my eyes....but archie had over a hundred fights before he got a shot at the title.....might be 129....happy counting.

there are many many many others who had more fights than marciano before his shot....actually he got there rather fast.....ezzard charles around 80....no idea how many for gavilan or robinson....maybe i'll dig into some when the drops cleat up.....but hey...they're right there on box rec.

Sorry, not end of thread. I just gotta say, "That's one helluva row to hoe before you get your first title shot". Could you imagine it today? We've got guys crying because they're 17-0 and they want a shot. What the hell would they do back then? Talk about dedication to your sport.

Greb doesn't have 100 unrecorded bouts. His record is pretty much complete right now, except possibly two, or three at the most, which the record here on boxrec is the best that I have ever seen for Greb and I have seen three seperately, but very thouroughly researched records for Greb by different historians and I'm still waiting to see the record that Steve Compton has for Greb, which will be in his book! Greb went 237 bouts before a title shot though, which should be the highest total though unless Johnny Dundee, or Jack Britton and possibly Battling Levinksy, though I haven't checked those guys records out!

Peter Buckley and Reggie Strickland are both waiting for the world titleshots.
