Apparently, the former World champion is in intensive care after being shot today.

He is one tough and rough guy not exactly pleasing to watch but he was never scared of anyone and fought the very best Barrera, Pacquiao, Marquez and Larios who he holds a win over among others.
Hopefully he will make a full recovery.

Just read it myself, was surprised to hear that. When I was in New York two summers ago, I went to Gleason's gym and Agapito Sanchez was training and I got to meet him and seen him sparring.

Hope he recovers well.

:( He died this morning shot twice in the chest by an off duty Police officer after an argument between the cop and Sanchez's girlfriend

That is terrible news, shocked to read that. He certainly was a boxing hard man and I enjoyed my time in Gleasons gym when I seen him sparring and training.

I hope the off duty cop who murdered him gets his comings.

Can't believe it. I too went over to Gleasons Gym in summer 2003 and saw him at work. Joan Guzman, Paulie Malignaggi (is that correct spelling?) and Sechew Powell were training there. Sanchez seemed a humble decent fella who just did his thing and went home. There was a little bit of rivalry what with Guzman holding his title at the time and being from the Dominican Republic too. But that was it.

I'm really shocked. Hope they find the fornicator who did it. South America is so corrupt.

Gleason's gym made you feel very welcome indeed, I watched Sanchez sparring from the side of the ring at the back of the gym, I have some photos of it, they are a little dark but they are nice to have. Sanchez was the only named pro in that afternoon, Guzman etc was not there. I seen the WBO on his shorts and knew straight away it was him. I was talking with Bruce Silverglade who own's the gym and we had a great chat about the gym and on Boxing in general. He brought Sanchez over to shake my hand.

Certainly is very bad news about him, I must look out some of those pictures.

I've seen quite a few of his fights - Barrera, Pac, Guzman. This was a bit of a shocker. :(

Been reading conflicting reports of what happened, here's the Reuters one:

Sanchez was shot twice by a sergeant of the Dominican armed forces on Sunday after the boxer refused to let the military man dance with his partner, said police spokesman Simon Diaz. Sanchez had been playing dominoes in the bar.

Injured in the abdomen, he was operated on in hospital but died Tuesday morning, at age 35, the police spokesman said. The gunman was also treated in hospital after being beaten by Sanchez's companions.

Thats crazy, never read that reason to how it came about, crazy indeed.

RIP Sanchez, will never forget his repeating of "Naseem next" or "Nasee Next" as he pronounced it on the undercard of a Naz bill in the US.

Thats it - when he beat Ramirez on the undercard of Hamed vs Augie Sanchez. Remember Ramirez was the mandatory so he did have a point.
