By Ant Evans: Cruiserweight warrior Carl Thompson will face French Champion Frederic Serrat in the chief support fight to Ricky Hatton's IBF/WBA junior welterweight unification collision at the Sheffield Arena, Sheffield, Saturday night.

Amazing 41-year-old Thompson, the reigning IBO champion who has been out for 14 months with injuries, fights the 28-year-old in an international 10 rounder which 'the CAT' hopes will push him closer to a fight with the winner of January's triple crown unification match between WBC/WBA champ Jean Marc Mormeck and IBF rival O'Neil Bell.

Thompson has not fought since schooling and stopping David Haye in five brutal round in London in September 2004; laid low with a mysterious stomach pain which eventually disappeared without treatment. However, he was anxious to comeback with a decent fight, time really of the essence at age 31, and Serrat is a good choice considering Thompson's inactivity.

There has been a lot of going back and forth between promoters Fight Academy and British pay-per-view paymaster Sky Box Office but Serrat, who was in training, has been pencilled in for three weeks now.

The respectable Serrat has a decent enough record of 23-4 (9) and is a good boxer rather than sledge-hammer puncher. He has only one stoppage loss on his record, five and a half years ago against Gairy Campbell (and, to be fair, I don't know the circumstances of that loss).

Has any of the rest of the undercard been finalized yet?

Carl Thompson (33-6, 25 KO's) will take on Fredric Serrat (23-4, 9 KO's) in a Cruiserweight bout scheduled for 10 rounds.

Gerard Ajetovic (10-0, 5 KO's) against Eugenio Montiero (14-7, 7 KO's) in a Jr. Middleweight bout scheduled for 8 rounds.

Matthew Hatton (25-2-1, 10 KO's) will battle Sergey Starkov (14-30-2, 2 KO's) in a Welterweight bout scheduled for 10 rounds.

Matthew Macklin (15-1, 11 KO's) takes on the Russian Middleweight Champ, Alexei Chirkov (17-1, 11 KO's) in an scheduled 8 rounder.

Lee Swaby (21-14-2, 10 KO's) takes on Vitaly Shkraba (13-10, 9 KO's) in a Cruiserweight bout scheduled for 6 rounds

Billy Dib (9-0, 6 KO's) faces Buster Dennis (7-11-2, 3 KO's) in Featherweight bout scheduled for 6 rounds.

Nicky Smedley (2-0) takes on Billy Smith

Stuart Brooks (3-0, 1 KO) faces TBA

There will porbably be another couple of bouts. i've heard tha Jackson 'Sugar The Ball Brains' Osei Bonsu, who's been sparring Rick, is also on the show.

Nelson and Enzo are fighting (not against each other!) in Rome the same night on ITV.

And people are paying to see that?... other than the Thompson fight, non of those bouts interest me... for PPV that is pretty dire. Warrens undercards have been shite for a long time FA had a good opportunity to do a good card and build themselves up but instead seem to be blowing it.
Is it because the Hattons are taking so much money theres none left over for a decent undercard? 8)

What will be on the PPV telecast?

That's my guess. I would also guess it is the same reason that Warren had many poor undercards, because the Hattons wanted top dollar.

Hatton has done bloody nicely I'll tell you that, most fighters in America would give their right nut to fight at home like he did almost every time, be the headline fighter, against largely handpicked opposition, and get handsomely paid every time.

Well it looks set to be a three hour PPV show in the UK, with Mitchell vs Mayweather (highlights) also shown. As Mayweather vs Mitchell finished early I do expect all of that fight to be shown.

I think they could very well show the entire card, unless they show more from the Mayweather card.

The guy Lee Swaby is fighting, Vitaly Shkraba, might pull off the upset. He gave Hersisia a very close fight a while ago, I think I had Hersisia one point up when he landed a big punch.

It's madness really that they haven't got Clinton on the card!.... a double header with Clinton defending his title would definately sellout I think... Clinton is a much better draw in Sheffeild than Hatton. They should be keeping Clinton busy and getting him to cash in on the title rather have him waiting around gathering dust.
I've said all along this fight with Maussa would be a flop, ...after Tsyu people don't want to see Hatton back in with a no hoper and most don't give a toss about the WBA belt as the ticket sales show.

I hope the British boxing fans can see through this matchup, I have a feeling they will. No way is Hatton-Maussa PPV worthy. Even though it's a unifier, it 'feels' more like a routine defence. Is Maussa much better than Ray Oliveira and Mike Stewart? What kills me is Graham was on the sky panel for Maussa's win over Harris, and said he 'moves like a man who's had a rupture'. That howler will be kept fornicating quiet.

Graham actually said after Maussa won the 'title' that he didn't think he'd be a good enough fight for Ricky..... seems like some people have got short memories...

Agree about Woods, but there probably wasn't enough money flying around. I'm sure Woods expects to be well paid now, and maybe isn't prepared to play second fiddle to Hatton, as he's a bill topper in his own right.

The Hallam arena wasn't filled to capacity as far as I remember for the last woods fight, one part was curtained off.

As for Graham, he stated quite clearly that he had no interest in Maussa for Hatton, but Graham is the trainer, he is not a matchmaker or manager, so what he says probably doesn't carry much clout. At the end of the day Ray and Ricky see it as money for old rope, and a lot of money at that....

Macklin and Ajetovic have a hard night's work ahead of them. They're both talented guys, but Chirkov and Monteiro are no pushovers. Should be interesting to see how they fare (not that I'll be buying the card or anything...)
