Typical, the only decent fight for Calzaghe and he takes it to Manchester.

I know he ain`t got much of a following here in Wales but I`d guess its alot more than in Manchester.

Wales are playing rugby on March 4th in Cardiff. There won't be a hotel room in sight far and wide for any fight fans. Quite why they cant do it a week later is beyond me, Showtime schedules I guess.

They originally said it was sometime between Feb and mid March.

Whatever excuses they come up with its all the same, Calzaghe always has his biggest fights outside of Wales.

It just shows that whilst Calzaghe is the home fighter, the fighter who will draw the crowd is the visitor  ....all his years at the top and he is still second-fiddle to a guy who only got noticed in the last 12-18mths

I will repeat myself once more, when boxing went to Sky that was the end of boxing super-stars in Britain.

It made McGuigan well known and he was at the top for a very very short time, imagine if Calzaghe had been fighting on national TV...I doubt very much he would still be fighting today..he`d be earning an easier living commentating about the sport...instead of still seeking recognition

If Calzaghe had been fighting on terrestrial TV his whole career he wouldn't still be unbeaten as he wouldn't have gotten away with all those easy fights.

The fight is probably in manchester because Warran has a deal with the MEN arrena that he is the only promoter allowed to show fights there one assumes he has to put on a certain amount of shows there in returnnow he doesn't have Hatton he must feel a bit of a tit.

I've been reading your posts. Interesting, you seem to hate allegedly and have a very blinkered view of his business practices.

Please declare your reasons for this as like many others on this site you seem to be a rebel without a cause.

What has he ever done to you? Are you in possession of facts? If so share them with us.

I think a lot of people feel that Warren doesn't put his fighters into competitive fights in order that he can make them a lot of money and strech out there carrerrs good for boxers but not fans.

The facts I am in possession of relating to the above post you quoted is that Calzaghe has defended his WBO belt against some of the worst world title challengers I can recall (WBO/WBC/IBF/WBA). I give you Kabary Salem, Mger Mkrtchian, Tocker Pudwill, Miguel Jimenez, Will McIntyre. The fact is none of those are anywhere near worth a world title shot, granted Mkrtchian was a mandatory but surely Calzaghe should have gone after one of the other world titles in the last 8 years. Finally he's having a big fight aged 32.... Enough facts there? As for Warren, how many mismatches and one sided cards did he promote on Sky over the years? The quality was terrible, and his start on ITV has not exactly been great although that is improving I have to say. Oh and how about Enzo Macarinelli fighting a guy who is 8-11 tomorrow evening? That is a disgusting bit of matchmaking.

Where do you fit into all this then? What's your angle?

frank's using up one of the MEN dates he bought for Ricky, just goes to show he had no intention of taking Ricky to the states he'd prebooked MEN for the next 100 years..

Ottke fought a couple of those guys too! Maybe it's because he held the WBA and IBF titles no one said anything. :P

The way Lacy and Beyer don't get shit for fighting past their prime fighters too and Kessler's going to be fighting a past his prime fighter in Eric Lucas but only Joe gets shit for it.

Ah well Joe beat Sheika and Reid in their primes and beat the guys Ottke fought without the help of the judges and actually Ko'ed them unlike Sven.

Cant wait to have 3 British IBF champs first Woods, Hatton and now Calzaghe come March. :TU:

i dont know whether that is meant to highlight how good Joe is or how bad his career has been if those are the two highlights you choose to mention.

Sheika lost to Tony Booth and was gifted most of his high profile wins....
Reid fight was razor close and should have been rematched

No not to highlight him otherwise I would of mentioned more than just them.

Just that the other super middles are getting credit for fighting past their prime fighters or bad opp but don't get shit for it but Joe does.

Reid was more talented back then so no wonder it was close and he stopped a younger Sheika in 5 yet Beyer and Lacy need the distance.

Ottke never got shit for fighting Pudwill or Thornberry or any other who Joe fought first yet Joe gets shit for fighting these guys!

Maybe Bias or different titles are to with it, yet people say the titles are meaningless unless it's a good fighter.

I'm sure he did duck a few of the fighter he said he;d fight but I'm they ducked him too just as bad. So maybe thats why some good ones didn't happen not just because of him but because of the other fighters.

I think its the way the SN and Calzaghe team carry on... it has put Joe up on a pedestal and we are shooting him down....

This is a British forum so we concentrate on British fighters generally... Ottke has had more stick than any fighter ever i guess :-)

Calzaghe talks the big talk and fails to deliver... Ottke and Beyer either keep quiet or we certainly dont get to read about it..

so many bullshit press releases over the years.... the fans have had enough

Thats understandable I guess but can't be just Joe's fault as theirs been claims from Warren like on that British Boxing article Ian did, saying that King and Warren agree that Hopkins would get 3 mill then demanded another 3 at the last minute!

Least Lacy ain't a chicken. :TU:

Hopkins purse demands were High, but he was the man!!!!

Calzaghe has never shown the desire to step up a level... he is happy with his pay cheque and limited risk...

People like Tito, Hopkins, Morales, Barrera, Danny Williams took huge risky fights for relatively crap money, knowing that should they be succesful they would increase their profile, boxing status and income in the long term...........and it worked for them.

Hopkins after Tito went on to earn massive purses, Tito after Oscar also went on to earn massive purses.. Danny against Tyson the same... Barrera and Morales fought each other first time for $200k each, they probably got 20 times this for the following rematches.. Gatti V Ward the same scenario.

Calzaghe has never shown that get up and go, that element of risk

(granted neither did Ottke :-))

Thats why, whilst being talented fighters they will never be mentioned in the same breath as the fighters mentioned above....

It's interesting that lately old Wazza seems to be adopting a new tactic in response to criticism on the Internet.

Namely getting his knob jockeys to sign up to the forums and try to defend the indefensible.

Hopkins was only the man at Middle not Super Middle and 3 mill was well enough and it was agreed apparently until Hop pulled out.

Are the tickets on sale yet? I might go to this one myself.
Joe Calzaghe's long-awaited super middleweight unification fight with Jeff Lacy will now go ahead at the Manchester Evening News Arena on Saturday 4 March 2006 . Tickets priced £40 to £300 are on sale from 10am on Tuesday 22 November.

Calzaghe, the WBO champion, was meant to face IBF rival Jeff Lacy on 5 November before the Welshman broke his hand while beating Evans Ashira. That led to a war of words between Calzaghe's promoter, allegedly, and his counterpart Gary Shaw. But the two boxers are now finally set to meet in Manchester next spring. The bout will take place at 0200 GMT on Sunday morning to accommodate US television requirements.

"This is the one I have been waiting for, and I can't wait for March 4," said unbeaten 33-year-old Calzaghe, who will be making the 18th defence of his title. "My hand will be fine and I'm looking forward to becoming a two-belt world champion. "I've always wanted to unify the belts, and now I've got a great chance to do so."

Lacy, 28, also boasts an unblemished record and had demanded that any rearranged fight should take place in the United States . But the American is now happy to give up home advantage and is confident of notching up his 22nd career victory.

"I've wanted to fight Joe for a long time, and now I've finally got my chance to show everyone I'm the best super-middleweight in the world," he said. "Joe has been a great champion, but my time has come. There is a new force in the division."

Doors open 8pm.

Last admission 11.30pm

Main fight 2am Sunday Morning
