I think the Gatti fight is still a tough one for Ricky, styles make fights, although he wouldn't get a lot of credit for beating him and you have to worry for Arturo for reasons that have been mentioned in other threads.

Next year does seem to be looking bright with Hatton appearing more and more likely to be fighting in the States from now on. Going over for Hopkins v Taylor, Barrera coming over for the Maussa fight, surely a deal with Golden Boy must be in the making?

A Gatti fight is a no win situation for Hatton and a bad career choice. We all accepted Maussa as an opponent as he was going to be in big fights after that then they might trawl out the shell of Gatti for him to beat up? Come on!

Screw Gatti! Hasn't Gatti told everyone he'll be at Welterweight from no on too!

He should just get rid of his IBF mandatory next so he can get on to the big fights faster.

If Hatton beats gatti he'll probably do so quicker than PBF as Gatti is ageing and has took too many beatings... then Hatton will boast about how he beat Gatti quicker than PBF.

+ He'll make alot of money out of a fight he can easily win

Agreed 100% ... If Hatton fights Gatti he's no better than Mayweather fighting a long list of bums.

Gatti is a shot fighter.

If Hatton wants to show Floyd up... He needs to chase genuine class fighters like Cotto/Mayweather/Judah/Margarito/Corrales/Castillo/etc

Not Gatti/Mitchell/Spinks/Mosley/or any other fighter that's shot and old!

Ummm - Cory Spinks is a massive 8 months older than Hatton. How can you say he is old and shot, based on one fight - which he was winning before getting careless. He hardly looked shot there.

Yes, he should be more active but is still an excellent boxer.

don't know about that. Gatti quit against Mayweather because he was getting humiliated, and couldn't lay a glove on him, wouldn't be the same agaisnt hatton.

Corey spinks isn't shot... He's just massivly overrated. He got given those belts when he fought Mayorga, and he got a little bit of a gift decision in his 1st defense against Judah.

Totally agree about Gatti being past it.

I think too much has been made of Mayweather beating Gatti, I also think that hatton has a better chance against mayweather than he would against Cotto.

Hatton should leave Gatti alone, and if he wants a big name then Corrales or Castillo offer better opposition, and will get him more respect in the USA also.

He fought Mayorga, who had just beaten Forrest - he was the betting underdog and was the promoters' choice of victor.... So not sure what you mean.

Sure the Judah fight was close, but isn't that indication that he isn't massively overated. He held a fighter who you consider a real fight for Hatton to a very close decision (which ever way you scored it). He was also given Judah a very tough fight in the rematch.

These two are pretty inseprable, the edge of power in favour of Judah would possibly be the deciding factor in the rematch - but Spinks showed twice that he can outbox him - just should stick to the gameplan throughout.

He'd have a huge reach advantage vs Hatton, and is much quick, faster and better than Maussa.

Not so sure it was a gift decision, the fight was nip/tuck with both men down, i don't think you could argue with Spinks hand being raised at the end. His win over Mayorga was a good one as Mayorga was coming off the back of two wins over Forrest. Spinks was perhaps a touch fortunate to win that fight if anything as Mayorga was deducted two points if i remember correctly and the final margins were still very close. I am not a massive Spinks fan but i wouldn't necessarily say he was overrated, he went to Italy twice and fought a peak Piccirrillo which deserves some respect, was allegedly robbed first time round and then won the rematch.

Yea Mayweather fights a long list of bums like 2 of the world class fighters in your column. And 3 world champion belt holders in his last 4 - might not be A class but solid B class all the same - despite them been easy wins for his floydness

Golden Boy said he would be fighting proberbly Mayorga in may. I can see a double hedder with Hatton Gatti and De La Hoya v Mayorga. WOuld really make hatton in the USA and be a hell of a big night.

When Spinks fought Mayorga... I got the feeling that they were going to try their damned hardest to make sure Spinks walked away with the belts that evening. They obviously didn't want Mayorga to be the champ.

Mayorga got deducted 2 or 3 points for no reason at all, There were several legit knockdowns Mayorga scored over Spinks that were never counted, and even if I include all that I still had Mayorga winning the fight by 2 rounds.

Spinks was just running... (At some points actually running away from Mayorga), he looked more like a fighter trying to survive 12 rounds than a fighter determined to unify a division!

- wearing stars and stripes shorts, an American fighter in America... Against the politically incorrect Nicaraguan fighter. I just smelt a robbery that's all.

Respect your opinion, think though you will be in the minority as far as the scoring of the fight is concerned. Perhaps the refereeing was poor, will have to view the fight, but I don't think many really thought Spinks lost the fight - especially if you don't score the KD's and point deductions.

Spinks made Mayorga look stupid for most of the fight.

If Mayorga was that much of a "hate" figure, then how come King has stuck by him and got him a world title.

Anyway, even if you thought he lost to Mayorga - he was still VERY competitive in two long fights with Judah people could argue if the first fight was 30 seconds longer it would be 2-0 to Judah. It could also be argued though if the first fight was 30 seconds shorter there wouldn't have been a rematch, cause the fight was then beyond argument.

Gatti will be battered by Hatton. It will be ugly, though worth watching and expect cuts. Hatton is not a concussive puncher to the head, so Gatti will take many, many punches to the head.....

Gatti should really retire, he will be blowing bubbles and talking to lamposts in a few years.....

Gatti isn't a very good fighter he just found a opponent with similar skills to himself in Ward and as a result of those wars was hyped up to be someting he wasn't which was some kind of great boxer. Not that I am taking anything away from him he has a good heart and enough nouse to get some decisions but was never realy world class.

Depends how shot gatti is. He moving up a weight

Gatti is fighting Damgaard(?) in January so we'll see how shot he is then. Can't make that call on the basis of the Mayweather fight. Ricky's probably got 4 or 5 fights left. Obviously the biggest fight at the moment is Mayweather but that'll be 18 month/2 years away. Both will want to keep winning and build up the fight financially. Why fight FMJ in 6 months for £3m when you can fight for double that later on?

They'll build Ricky's profile in the US and Gatti is the perfect fight to do that. It's not the best fight from a legacy point of view but lets not forget boxing is a business unfortuntely and from a business point of view the Gatti fight makes sense.

Gatti to make his name stateside and earn him lots and lots more money, followed by Cotto/Mayweather, I don't think that it's a disgraceful plan and as John said might not inhance his legacy but it would be a very exciting fight to introduce him to the septics esp if they can get it on a De La Hoya show.

The only downside imo is the danger to Gatti's health as it's another war for him plus more boiling down in weight.

Do not worry about Gatti's health etc. His manager, Pat Lynch recently stated that if a fight with Hatton were to happen, it would have to be @ a catch-weight. Lynch there is o way the fight would happen @ 140lbs.

Gatti looked massive as a light-Welter. He was struggling real bad to make weight against Mayweather. I heard he had to work-out twice on the day before the weigh-in.

I think the fight makes sense for both fighters, although I cannot see Gaitt winning. Both guys will get rewarded well. Gatti will provide Hatton with a tough test. Styles makes fights!

After Gatti, I can see Hatton trying to get Cotto and then Mayweather. I can also see a fight with Mayweather taking place @ Welterweight. I think Mayweather is set on trying to get Judah's title, and will not move back down to 140lbs.

It's not the extra 7lb's that makes me worry though. Gatti was being written off years ago, and he had to go to hell and back against Ward. I'm not saying he should retire just because Mayweather gave him a drubbing, because Mayweather is capable of handing out a few lessons. What I'm saying is that he shouldn't be wheeled out to make Hatton look good.

The fact is, Hatton-Gatti was a great fight 2 or 3 years ago. Right now, It's not worthwhile: Surely Hatton is the only winner? And that win wouldn't mean that much, surely? Fact is, Gatti will have to go to war again, against a guy that is young, hungry, strong, and a harder hitter than he seems. Hatton likes Gatti, has said he's friendly with him. But Ricky is, as Billy Graham says, Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to actually fighting: If he's put in the same ring as Gatti, he'll go all out to smash him to bits. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that Gatti could produce a win against the odds, of course, but even if he did that, he'd get plenty of punishment along the way.

Anyone saying this fight should take place because: 'It's great exposure for Hatton if he beats Gatti' should be ashamed of themselves. I recognise why the fight is being talked about, but no way should Arturo Gatti be used as a puchbag for Ricky Hatton to sell himself in the U.S. And that's the basis of talks for this fight. If HBO want to build up a Hatton-Mayweather/Cotto fight, then they should pay the money for Hatton to fight Castillo or Witter, or stop paying Mayweather millions to fight guys who aren't in his league, and actually build interest in a fight. But I can't approve of Gatti being beaten up in order to make money for other fighters. He deserves more than that.
