Been a lot of talk of this with Hatton having unified, I think he has to make a mandatory defence every 18 months once the WBA champion wins the 'title'.

CONCEPT

The WBA SUPER WORLD CHAMPION or UNDISPUTED CHAMPION is a World Champion who holds two or more World Titles of the leading sanctioning bodies (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO).

In order to fight for the Vacant SUPER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, the WBA World Champion must have to comply with at least one mandatory fight according to what it is established in the World Championships Regulations, or he must be a champion of well-known international recognition that holds the world title in that division or a different weight class.
PURPOSE

Contribute with the unification of the World Titles through tournaments or competitions (Box-offs) between the leading sanctioning bodies to fulfill the expectations of the boxing fans throughout the world that demand a Unique Champion recognized worldwide.

WBA SUPER WORLD CHAMPION or UNDISPUTED CHAMPION TITLE DEFENSES

DEFENSE GUIDELINE FOR THE WBA SUPER WORLD CHAMPION or UNDISPUTED CHAMPION. The mandatory defense of the SUPER WORLD CHAMPION must be every 18 months if he holds 2 World Titles of the leading boxing organizations, or every 21 months if he holds 3 or the 4 titles of the leading boxing organizations. The World Championships Committee will be the body with the authority to determine and ratify the status of a mandatory challenger who should be the WBA World Champion of the respective division.

The SUPER CHAMPION mandatory defense against the Official Challenger, determined by the World Championships Committee, will be every 18 months, that is the WBA World Champion of the respective division.

The Heavyweight SUPER WORLD CHAMPION must make the mandatory defense against the official challenger, determined by the World Championships Committee, that is to say the WBA World Champion of the division, every 21 months if the SUPER CHAMPION holds two World Titles of the leading boxing organizations, or every 24 months if he holds 3 or the 4 titles of the leading boxing organizations.
PURPOSE

o To give the SUPER CHAMPIONS a period of time long enough that allows them to comply the mandatory defenses of the other organizations. Currently the WBA World Championships Rules and Regulations establishes for the Heavyweight division a period of 12 months, counted from the date he won the title, to make their mandatory defenses, the other divisions establish a period of 9 months.
o To allow the SUPER CHAMPIONS to make optional fights avoiding conflicts with the fulfillment of the WBA World Championships Rules and Regulations or avoid conflicts with the rights of the leading available contenders of the division. For example: Roy Jones Jr., World Champion of the four leading boxing organizations has made only one mandatory defense in the WBA in 34 months, since he won the title (07/18/1998) to Lou del Valle.
o To give the WBA World Champions the opportunity to make some voluntary defenses of their title –benefiting the activity and the rated contenders of the division-, before they comply with their mandatory fights, which will be a requirement to use their right to fight for the SUPER CHAMPIONSHIP.
o All the leading boxing organizations that rule the sport as the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO, pursue the Undisputed World Champion through the promotion of the Unification of titles.

I think that roughly translates to "We make it up as we go along. Sanction fees please!!"

Okay so with that info, I just had a look at the WBA rankings.

M'baye isn't going to just get awarded the WBA "normal" belt, he is going to have to fight for it.

Here are the rankings - their quite interesting.

5) Harris

7) Bahari
8) Kotelink
9) Abdulaev
10) Mosquera
11) D Hopkins.

Mmmmm....... Can you see EITHER Hatton OR Witter working with Warren again. It is looking likely that if Hatton does get "promoted" to Super Champion then M'baye will have to fight Witter - I think Tszyu will retire.

I hope Witter goes for the WBC.

If Floyd fights Zab will he have to vacate it? If so we could have Witter Vs Branco for the Vacant title, then Hatton Vs Witter.

I could see Harris fighting M'Baye for the vacant belt.

It will probably be M'Baye in a rematch, either vs Harris or vs Kotelnik that most likely will make jump up in the rankings after beating Abdulaev (and winning a WBA title)

I think this is right states.

The only unified (as opposed to undisputed) champions I can think of now are Marquez and Mormeck.

Marquez is dodgy to begin with, as the WBA stripped him or something recently or something. But anyway, it seems Chris John fought for the WBA interim title before Marquez had even unified against Gainer.

Then there's Mormeck, who only unified April this year, and no new WBA champ there as far as I know.

But then again RJJ had every title under the sun for years and there was no new WBA title created there.

What's the crack with fighters and there belts. When they win, for arguments sake the IBF belt, is that the fighters possesion for ever and if there is a new champion the IBF will hand them a new belt? I remember Flloyd walking in to the Gatti fight with about 6 WBC belts!? Is it the same as the Lonsdale in that if you make 3 defenses, you keep the belt?

Pretty irrelevant to the post I know, I was just interested thats all.

I guess if a boxer wins a title, then they get to physically keep that particular belt. So there isn't just one WBA LWW belt forever - zoo probably has a bely in his attic or something.

Whether they get a new belt every time they make a defence I wou'dn't have thought so, but that's just a guess. Imagine the WBO belts sicknote would have lying around His ebay feedback score must be huge.

Ha ha ha. Not only do we now seem to be keeping certain boxing magazines updated on the latest title-unifying welterweights, but we are also innadvertantly acting match-maker for the sanctioning bodies.

Virgil Hill will fight undefeated Russian Valery Brudov for the WBA cruiserweight title.

Yet another opportunity for Hill, who is now 69 and is a really stubborn stickler when it comes to principles:
