I am trying to add another chapter to my book, based on the people who have made the biggest contributions to British Boxing over the years, and I would love to hear your suggestions, some of mine are

Lord Lonsdale, Solomon, Best, Duff, Warren, Carpenter, Shepperd (for this creation, maybe he'll be there, when people look back in 2200!).. Any bios you have on these guys would be great.

Either reply here or send me an e-mail to [email protected]

On Lord Lonsdale there's a so called biography "The yellow Earl", but sincerely I don't suggest it to you. On him, best sketches on "Noble and Manly". He patroned also first British weightlifting open competitions in early 1891. Don't forget Gilbert Odd.
Best wishes

Thanks,

I have just brought Noble and Manly but haven't had the time to read it as yet. I'll try to get some reading in over the weekend

What about all the fights I've promoted only two weeks ago Booth v Oates and Khaliq v Nesterenko were both great match ups !

WHen Lonsdale died there was an excellent long bio in the NY Times. I will see if I can dig out the exact date, but I am not sure I have it. I seem to recall it was NOT in the Sports section and possibly was in the Sunday magazine.

If you could get me a date for the article or a copy that would be great.

John, I agree the Booth/Oates fight was a cracker, didn't see the other but have been told it was also a great fight, so who would you say have been the main players in British Boxing over the years?

'Peggy' Bettinson and Eugene Corri should be worth a mention. Also John Murray, the founder and first editor of Boxing News.

On the journalist/broadcast side maybe Frank Butler and Barrington Dalby.

Good luck with the book.

You need to speak to my great friend Pepe Forbes who has been a boxing agent for the last 50 years. He will be at Crawley this Monday and the Elephant & Castle show Sat 23rd. If you can come I'll introduce you to him.

What about Digger Stanley, bantomweight . Lonsdale belt holder .

Digger Stanley will be in the book as a boxer, what I was looking for was a good chapter on the other influential players in Boxing History, i.e. Promoters, Trainers etc...

kevin , I am .digger Stanleys , his promoter was a wealthy bookmaker Alf Mack I dont have much info on Alf as I am in Australia. Will wait for your book. But one fact remains the Lonsdale Belt Digger owned outright was destroyed and recyled by the Brithish boxing authorities of the time .
