Light Flyweight Champion James Fowl - Hoddesdon Boxing Academy
Evenly matched bout that saw Fowl build the momentum over the last two rounds to clinch a well deserved 18-10 decision over the Army's Keith Spong.
Flyweight Champion Paul Edwards - Salisbury ABC
A somewhat tangled affair that kept the Referee busy issuing warnings to both boxers. The shorter crisper work of Edwards overcoming Hollington ABC's Stewart Langley with a score of 16-12.
Bantamweight Champion Nick McDonald -Vauxhall ABC
A superb technical encounter with Stuart Hall - Spennymoor ABC saw McDonald add to his list of titles by the slender margin of 3 points. The final score of 21-18 reflected Halls contribution in a bout that saw fotunes change through every round.
Featherweight Champion Stephen Smith - Rotunda
First out of the traps for the Rotunda boys Smith came prepared for Mitchell brother's conqueror Akaash Bhatia's (Eltham ABC) measured aggression. The scoreline of 8-6 was indicative of Smiths ability to control the fight, tying up an at times frustrated Bhatia and doing just enough to nick the decision.
Lightweight Champion Anthony Crolla - Fox ABC
Crollas winning margin of 29 over 16 appeared at odds with the contribution Pacy made to this fight. I must confess to missing a fair bit of this bout but my sidekick and others that I spoke to felt the score whilst correct to be a little surprising.
Light Welterweight Champion Jamie Cox - Walcot ABC
There's been much written about Jamie Cox following the withdrawal of Amir Khan from last seasons ABA's when on a collision course with the big punching Western Counties youngster. A beaten finalist last year Cox came of age tonight with a polished hard punching victory over Eddie Corcoran of Stowe ABC. Southpaw Cox has obvious power, is just as happy to work downstairs as to the head and possesses the one ingredient that so often seperates the good from the sublime............hand speed.
Barring one brief spell where Cox's full range punches seemed to barely land and Corcorans replies pushed his opponents head back (I certainly witnessed more than the 6 recorded shots awarded to Eddie Corcoran in this 24-6 victory) the title never looked like it wasn't bound for Walcot!
Welterweight Champion Denton Vassell - Fox ABC
Described to me earlier as 'having watched every video made featuring Mike Tyson', Vassell tore up the computerised scoring coaching manual and bobbed, weaved and bulldosed his way to the Welterweight crown with a 17-14 points victory over the Army's second representative Brett Flournoy. Made to work off the back foot and given little or no time to settle Flournoy done more than enough to earn a share of the spoils but Vassells powerfully landed shots made it easy for all 5 judges to push the button in favour of 'Mini Mike' Vassell!
Middleweight Champion James Degale - Dale Youth ABC
James 'Chunky' Degale has been touted as the linear successor to Amir Khan in terms of sheer ability and likely winner of international medals.
In this clash of the southpaws, or in Degales case, southpaw switch hitter, the opening round was inconclusive as Rotunda ABC's McNally set out his stall with early points coming from overhand rights. From the start of the second an increased tempo from both boxers saw Degale settle first and start to dissect McNallys defence. Joe battled valiantly, catching Chunky with some cool counters but the show was being stolen by the hand speed and unorthodox style of the Dale Youth boxer who took on the persona of the great Sugar ray Leonard and showboated to a comfortable 25-12 victory.
Will somebody please tell James Degale that he will never get to box for England with a loose hands low style and that all the judges will and officials will go against him Wink Sorry couldn't resist that Laughing
Light Heavyweight Champion Tony Jeffries - Sunderland ABC
The first stoppage of the night came in the third round of Jeffries bout with Joe Ainscough of Kirkdale ABC. Jeffries got off to a rapid start and working behind the jab had early success with follow up right hands clubbing over the top of Joe's defence. Unfazed by the early setbacks Ainscough battled through the first round and the early part of the second before Jeffries pulled away, inflicting 2 standing counts just prior to the end of round bell. The crowd indicated that the margin for enforcement of the outclassed rule was less than 3 points and the third round saw that tally reached and Jeffries crowned the Light Heavy Champ.
Heavyweight Champion Tony Bellew - Rotunda ABC
Winning 3 titles in a row was made to look easy by 'Bomber' Bellew who cruised to a second round stoppage of game but outgunned Nathan Thompson of Wellington ABC. Having only watched brief clips of Bellew on TV I was unsure what to expect but was pleased to see a markedly patient and thoughtful approach as he worked behind the jab through most of the first round seeking only to capitalise when chinks appeared in Thompsons heavy duty high handed defence. In fact it was Thompsons high guard that ultimately led to his downfall as Bellews attacks to the side of the body opened up room for uppercuts, hooks and 2 handed straight punches to the head. The first standing count appeared precautionary, from where I sat up in the gods, the second was essential and the looming third never materialised as referee 'Mick' Basi had seen enough.
Well done Bomber. For such an entertaining performance we here in the Warrior Boxing office will be having a whip round to buy you a pair of full size proper boxing boots
Super Heavyweight Champion Derek Chisora - Finchley
On first appearances it seemed the only way for Tom Dallas (St.Marys ABC) to halt the marauding North Londoner would be to borrow the gun used to shoot JR Ewing in the television series of the same name! With a reputation for having a dig, big Derek was obviously up for this one and was in Toms face throughout the first 3 rounds. Dallas's leaning on brought a couple of cautions from the ref as myself and others around me questioned why the taller man who had demonstrated a good jab when given enough room wasn't using it? I understand that Chisora was some way behind going into the last round, which ironically did feature the Dallas jab more often but a final battering and standing count was enough to secure victory and complete the natural accession from Novices Champ last year to ABA champ this.
