Ricky Hatton has got my vote. Alot of people seem to be voting Peter Crouch

it will only be a sportsman who is featured regularly on BBC, hence the title BBC sports personality of the year !!

Crouchey gets my vote too..... he has defied all expectations for Liverpool and England.

As a lifelong Liverpool fan, I have only this to say: PISS OFF YOU BASTARDS!!!!!!

Let's face it, Flintoff is the winner this year. Hatton will hopefully get a mention though: His name is cropping up on the propaganda, after all. Not bad, seeing how he's never fought on the Beeb.

In fairness, it's best Hatton doesn't win: The bloke will be nigh on 13 stone by the awards, how bad would that look if he picked up the award of sportsman of the year?

i really think that now England did so bad at the cricket, especially Flintoff, so i think Ricky has a great chance now

I've given Ricky my vote. Yes, Flintoff is total quality, and yes, he played a big part in England winning the ashes for the first time since 19 oatcake. But would you say he personally played more of a part than say, Botham, in that 80s Ashes test?

Then think of the devotion Hatton has to put in before a fight like the zoo one. Unless you're a boxer you can only imagine the killing training that has to go in. Then you have the psychological factor to overcome. Then you've got to beat the best of the best.

The voting is only to nominate contenders, it doesn't influence the final result. The shortlist is then analysed by a panel and a winner chosen. I think this format has been chosen due to some questionable award winners in the past ("A Nation Once Again" by the Wolfe Tones once won or almost won greatest song of all time in a poll which I think may have been run by the BBC. This was down to emails going around offices in Ireland getting everybody to vote for it).

Who did win?

I don't bother watching it as it is usually so predictable. (Though I did see it the year boxing dominated as Lennox Lewis won Sportsmen of the year, and Muhammad Ali won Sportmen of the century.)

silly mate, the Aussies are the best team in the world in bothams days it was the west indies.

in fact the west indies today were not much worse if any than the aussies of bothams era. Its like comparing zoo and maussa the asueeis in the 80s and the team of the past recentyears.

you arent comparing like or like, have a look at bothams record vs the Windies, fact is flintoff did it aginst the best in the world as did hatton.

im not decrying bothams acheivements, je is a legend but in this instance his impact was slightly bigger than freds but aginast a much much worse team.


Its a toughie fred will win it but for me its a dead heat.

That's fair enough. I wasn't really focusing on Botham v Flintoff but my bad all the same as they say. The opposition has to be taken into account

Well, piss poor boxing coverage, obviously they gave Hatton a mention, and then the Khan/Murray thing, but that was it. No other boxers exist then do they?

As for the vote itself, I'll echo what I posted earlier, that Hatton, or any professional boxer has to go through one shit load of physical and psychological pain to get where he is. Your likes of Gerrard, ok, he is one quality quality player, but football is a team game, and re the training he does a couple of hours in the morning before getting home for Countdown. Anway.

The most brilliant part was when they got Pele out. What a legend! Liniker asks him if England have a chance at the next World Cup, expecting an answer along the lines of "of course, they have good players and a good team." But old Pele starts off on a history of World Cup finals since 1950! Half an hour later they couldn't shut him up! And it's not even his first language. I thought that was brilliant And also everyone dreesed to the fours in plush suits - until Daley Thompson comes out in a jogging suit borrowed from the set of Rocky. WTF???

Ha ha, Daley probably still has box loads of retro Adidas gear in his loft from his athletics days and thats all he seems to bother wearing!

The BBC are never going to go mad about boxing so it's no surpise that some sailing bird gets so many votes.

To be fair I think that Flintoff deserved to win it as he had a great summer and England beat the Aussies despite everyone saying they would get thrashed.

I think that Hatton would have to fight and win 3 or 4 times in a year to be recognised as the no.1 sportsman in the UK (by the BBC and it's viewers)

The whole thing was a rip off and a con.

Right up until the result was announced you could still vote for your choice. But lo and behold Flinthoff had obviously been decided a long time ago hence the fact he was presented with the trophy in Pakistan.

So what was the point of the voting on the night? And more importantly what happened to the money the BBC made from the phone calls and the texts for the useless votes made after they had already decided the winner?

To be fair, I think it's a disgrace that they hauled Flintoff out of bed anyway. It's the most interest the BBC have shown in cricket for ages. They didn't even bother competing with SKY for the test matches, yet they can magic a film crew over to pakistan at 3am to interview someone who clocked up 50% of his lifetime BBC screen time by picking up the award.

But although it was evidently cut and dried who was going to win, I can actually see a good argument for him getting the call over Hatton: he was Man of the Series and clearly the most valuable member of the side which won a major trophy for the first time in eons, and he had a major impact on the national conscious throughout the summer. Would have been nice for him to dedicate the award to Channel 4, though...

Hatton's achievements were phenomenal but if it was just on how hard someone trained or how fit they were then a boxer would win every year. He had a monumental year but his impact on the nation was not in the same league as Flintoff's. How many more kids will be playing cricket because of Flintoff than boxing because of Hatton...

As far as the show goes, I haven't watched it in ages. It makes me cringe, it's an awful, embarrassing cavalcade of crapness that only serves to remind you just how little decent sport the BBC has nowadays and how comedy should be left to comedians.
