Did Kevin Mitchell justify his title of Young British boxer of the Year?

I was quite impressed by his punch-picking and fire, but it's a pity that that fire wasn't spread - he had to frequently rely on resting on the ropes after two minutes as the middle rounds approached.

He was also a bit too straight up and far too close in at times.

All those early blowouts to blame methinks.

He's got Alex Arthur's old belt (I think). He'd do well to learn from Arthur's mistakes and follow his lead from the Odumase fight on.

I thought he looked quite poor to be honest.

Far far far too open to right hands and the amateurish fighter was hitting him at will, if he had just a little more power then he'd have won easily.

Quite why there is all this hype surrounding Mitchell is beyond me. yes I'm aware of his amateur pedigree, but christ... he looked distinctly average.

He is 17-0 and his opposition so far found him out last night, he needs tougher fights now or he will be a defeat waiting to happen when/if he eventually steps up to a meaningful level.

That is absolutely on the button Mr 689 sir. All these guys - Mitchell, calzaghe, Audley Harrison, Khan, Maccarinelli - their all getting their records bloated by fighting bums and arn't learning what they would against better opponents. Take a leaf out of John Murray's book - his last opponent was one decent test - could've beaten Murray perhaps if not for the stoppage. But if he had lost, so what? Murray is 20 for christ sake. If anything he'll come on leaps and bounds for that, and factor it into his plan next time around. Better to lose or find yourself outclassed at that stage and take it onboard than find yourself out of depth when it's too late - Harrison for example. If he'd got cut or KO's or actually been punched by his opponent a couple of years ago now - fine - learn and move on. Too late now

Good posts Jo and Steve. Look what happend when Audley went from fighting bums to his first decent test. Alex Arthur is another - but look how Arthur has bounced back.

Very open, I thought he had hurt his jabbing hand at one stage - didn't like the way he was carrying it when on the ropes. Obviously not, hope he has a good chin because it looks like he needs one.

re. the hand injury, that reminds me. For those of you who don't seek to better yourselves by frequenting the current scene, there's a guy who poses as Harrison. He usually sticks up a post just after Harrison has fought or if a press statement has just been released. But things reached new heights last night. It was too funny picturing Audley actually doing this.

Yo fight fans I am in my dressing room with my wireless laptop. Tonight I injured my left hand in the third round but I don't like to make excuses. Danny won the fight but I will be back! One defeat does not mean much. My man Lennox lost but came back..... I can do the same!

Murray's leagues above Kev Mitchell, Mitchell winning the young boxer award above him is total bullshit. Can you imagine Murrays last opponent in place off Mitchell's last night?? Mitchell would be fast asleep, lets not forget that guy Kev fought last night had I think 2 KO's on his record and thats at a very low level...

Was at the fight last night and was very impressed by Mitchell.
The opponent was tough, confident and wanted it badly, not forgetting he had won his last 10.
Kevin is again showed an excellent fast and hurtfull jab, good ring skills a great workrate and has power in both hands. The left hook he dropped the guy with was a peach and once once he switched downstairs he closed the show in style.
This young man is learning all the time and has all the tools and minerals to go as far as he desires in this game.

I thought kevin got hit more times then i have seen before he was fortunate he was not in with someone who could punch with the right hand. Kevin was offering his chin to the right hand as though it was on offer land 1 get 1 free.Even commentary were asking how many right hands he was been tagged with.
As mentioned above good job he was not in with Murrays opponent from last week or that would of been the end of him last night.
Hopefully his new trainor can iron out these flaws i am sure it has been a difficult last couple of months switching trainors but after last night performance he is a league below John Murray.

Good post kit but your are wasting your time with some off the numbskulls on here ....Audry was the big thing with em a while back that's how clued up they are!!!...its like trying to explain the Offside Rule to Forest Gump!!!

Gotta agree Kit. Mitchell looked good, had power speed and took shots well. But he did seem to neglect his defense a bit. Ok at this level, but I'd worry a bit when he moves up. The Frenchman seems to lack a punch tho, only 2 kos in 16. Had ha had power Mitchell could have been worried. However it was a good display by Kevin who fought a good opponent who can to win.

Question: They said on TV last night that Mitchell's opponent was a late booking. Just how late was it, anyne know? Was it so late that he didnt have time to weigh in as there's no weight record for him for last night.

Mitchell looked appalling last night to be honest, he's lucky that opponent had no sort of power, otherwise we'd of been looking at a shock KO defeat. All mitchell did was load up and hurl massive punches hoping for one to KO his opponent. His left hook in round three was impresive but in looking for the finish he looked horribly open. Mitchell showed no boxing skill whatsoever last night and on this showing Amir would sweep him aside.

Good opponent for Mitchell - the Frenchman came to win, and you hope it was a good learning experience for KM.

Not quite sure what Kev was on about after fight, saying he'd been working on keeping his left hand up? It was down by his waist most of the time...

With his chin way up in the air as he winged punches, he's gonna get flattened if he meets a decent puncher anytime soon. Hopefully sort that out ASAP

Kevin has all the tools needed to go and be a star in this division.

I believe Kevin is with the right man in Paul Cook to tighten up Kevin's defence and take his performances on to the next level.

Also I have to say his young rivals Khan and Murray are hardly free from defensive frailty.

As much as I like John Murray, he lacks head movement, stands in punching range and is willing to take one to give one, even though he lacks any raw power. He took a lot of punishment in his last fight, just look at the state of the lads face and how he was rocked. He would have been in serious trouble swapping shot for shot with Mitchell.

Also Khan while unleashing his pitter patter combinations appears to be staring up at the ceiling lights. If Craig Watson can drop him, Mitchell would nail him to the canvas (even baring in mind he is a division or two lighter)

That said all these kids are all excellent talents and will go on to generate enormous excitement, all have room for improvement, we can all knit pick but why not support all these young British talents.
