Wow. Great match-up Brockton.

As good as Chavez was, I think a prime Ike Williams had the style to beat him by a unanimous decision.

This matchup might be a lot like the first Chavez v. Taylor fight, just with a different outcome.

The only way I can see Chavez winning is by a late KO, but Williams had a very good chin and I find it hard to believe that Chavez could catch Williams enough to drop him.

I could see this either going like Chavez-Mayweather 2 or maybe Randall-Chavez 1, just in the physical similarities of both guys (clever slick boxers with speed and goodnight right crosses) vs Chavez. Of course, Brockyblockwhateverhisnameis is going to say I'm a fool for daring to compare the right crosses of Wiliams and Mayweather, but there. I am.

So, er, I'd take Chavez late after Ike foolishly trades whilst well ahead on the cards or a Williams win surprisingly wide on points.

Chavez after a spirited 13 round battle. Williams would brawl too much and Chavez's body work would make him pay late. A prime lightweight Chavez was nearly impossible to beat, especially with an aggressive style like Williams.

imo Williams was one of the all time great lightweights ,but so was J.C.Chavez, having seen both fight in person , i would pick Williams by ud

What a great fight.

Ike was a great puncher. Anyone ever seen his stoppage of Beau Jack in the sixth round? Savage, truly savage... When Williams let his fists go, he was ultra ferocious. Fast, accurate, powerful... The combinations were not varied, but the one-two-one-two-one-two was impossible to avoid. Beau Jack had a granite chin and was a superb fighter in his own right, but he couldn't cope with the fury of a desperate Williams, who had just had his tooth knocked out and was trying to end the fight as soon as possible.

That said, Chavez had a chin of stone. The greatest chin of all the lightweights? Possibly, possibly not. I would rate Duran's slightly above him. But whatever his positioning, Chavez took some real bombs throughout his career from some of the hardest hitters and didn't budge. Chavez was far from just a durable swarmer though... He set up his punches, threw them in bunches and landed with accuracy. His body shots were debilitating.

While Ike was tough and not nearly glass-jawed, he was not overly durable. Chavez was a great puncher, and I believe he could take whatever Williams could dish out, although painfully. I would pick Chavez by a late rounds stoppage.

Very entertaining though.

While I think Ike Williams was an underrated and always dangerous fighter, in fairness he's just not in Chavez's league. Williams would cause Chavez some problems with his speed and boxing ability, but the Mexican would systematically break him down with his body attack. Chavez by stoppage around the 12th.

i disagree about him not being in chavez league. who were the best fighters chavez ever beat a lightweight?? rosario? ramirez? ike williams beat two hall of fame lightweights bob montgomery and beua jack in title defenses. id say he was defintley in chavez league.

in fact i rate him higher than chavez on my all time lightweight list

montgomery was done by the time Williams avenged an eallier loss. Jack was indeed a great victory for Williams. However, Rosairo, who is also now a hall of famer, was the dominant lightweight when Chavez moved up top fight him.Rosario at that time would have been a handful for anybody.

But i totally agree with you. Although I believe Chavez would win a match between them I believe williams is definitly in his league. Not only that, but if your going by accomplishment at the weight , then williams would have to rank higher, since Chavez only fought a few times in the division.

disagree, montgomery was 28 and was the lightweight champion. the only fights he had lost recentley were over the lightweight limit. montgomery aged badly after the ike williams fight. that rematch vs ike williams fight ruined him.

Than in there first fight yes. Both fights were awsome, They were going so hard at each other its hard to keep track of the punches being landed. I guess you can attribute him not looking as dominating as he did in the first fight to Williams having improved. Losing his last six fights could be attributed to the damage Williams did to him in the second fight, so I suppose you could be right.

When Ike Williams fought for his first world title he already had 7 losses and 2 draws on his record. During his prime he wasen't exactly unbeatable either, UNLIKE Julio Cesar Chavez who is one of the greatest fighters PFP who ever lived.

I am biased as Ike was a good friend of mine. Ike by decision.

That's entirely true, especially when Ring Magazine states that Williams "lost several on disputed decisions", which I've read that two of Ike's decision losses to Willie Joyce were quite controversial in nature.

Coupled that with the pre-JWW Chavez' somewhat controversial fights he had against Laporte (KO Mag was so convinced that Laporte beat Chavez that they gave Juan the #1 spot in their subsequent rankings), Lockridge (so some say), and the other earlier DQ loss that was changed over to a Chavez victory later on.
