was this fight close? i have heard some sources say yes, and others say no

Marshall won the first eight rounds by "consistently connecting with right hand shots that opened cuts around his opponents eyes".

LaMotta only fought in spurts until the 9th round when he poured on more pressure. The decision was unanimous in Marshall's favour (Ref and two judges).

LaMotta claimed an injured knuckle after the bout, but this did not prevent him punching away in the final two rounds as he sought the required KO.

One press report claims that, as the fight wore on, Marshall showed signs of making the stipulated weight of 161. LaMotta came in at 1581/2 and Marshall 1601/4.

I did read that thread at the time and while I did cite one of Marshall's sparring partners as saying that it was an easy fight for Lloyd, I did not mention anything about it being LaMotta's thoughness (or a reputation for the same) that prevented the bout from being stopped.

Marshall also indicated that he felt Booker, Burley or Chase would beat LaMotta.

I don't recall saying that. I still have the interview on tape, so I could check what it was that Mr Nelson told me.

From memory (which could be wrong), I think that it was more a case of the beating LaMotta received from Marshall - and apparrently he was a sorry state at the end - would have stopped most other fighters. That's not really the same as LaMotta being allowed to continue because he was LaMotta.
