John O’Donnell continued his rapid progression through the professional ranks with an impressive victory over the tough Zaid Bediouri at the National Stadium in Dublin on Saturday night.

The former junior amateur superstar, making his debut in Ireland as a professional, dominated the far more experienced Moroccan from the off with stinging combinations from behind his slick southpaw stance to claim a landslide decision. The knowledgeable crowd appreciated the display.

“I got a great reception,” said O’Donnell, whose parents both come from Galway. “The people got behind me from the start, they really seemed to appreciate my style.

“There was some of my family there as well, so I really felt at home. My promoter Mick Hennessy says I will be coming back to Ireland, so I am looking forward to that.”

Of his opponent he continued: “Bediouri was tough, a real character. He was just the kind of opponent I need. I don’t want easy fights; I want tests that will stand me in good stead later on in my career.”

Next for the Robert McCracken trained fighter is an eight-rounder at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on 17th February. There are also plans for him to fight in Canada and America this year.

If O'Donnel's name was Amir Kahn , his opponent would have been stopped in the 3rd/4th . He was so dominant in the last 3 rounds I was suprised the referee didn't step in .

Bediuori was brave but was outclassed by a very impressive O'Donnel .
He's so accurate with his shots it's incredible , he's got a very good jab aswell .

He didn't impress me that much. For all his boasts that he is better than Amir and Mitchell, he didn't really look it.

His opponent was hesistant to punch, I'd often see him attempt a jab only to pull it back half way thrown for fear of a counter.

O'Donnell himself seems to have a leaky defense to me despite not getting caught much. He keeps his right hand down very low in favour of better jabbing but opens himself up for someone to have a good dig at him if they have the speed. Very open to straight punches. I think he is a prospect but not a world class one, possibly EBU level, will wait and see. Looking forward to seeing how he improves.
