guzman - not that impressive

Watching a DVD of Guzman in action against Joe Morales, courtesy of Stu, and I have to say I am not all that impressed with what I am seeing, whether it's due to him not making weight for that fight as he was 6 lbs over on the scales I don't know.
He has poor defence, and took a lot of shots from Morales, who was fortunately for him not any kind of puncher. He unloaded everything but the kitchen sink on Morales in the first 2 rounds, and never came close to stopping him, and it's notable that Morales was a Super Featherweight.
Guzman has good boxing skills, but he was mostly standing there whaling away with wild hooks,
If Scott stays on top of him all the time, I think he has a good shot of retaining his title, because Guzman seems to like to fight in spurts.

That's pretty much what I've been saying. A lot of people have been rating Guzman but to date he hasn't really beaten anyone of note, Harrison is his first big test really.
He is often wild with his punches and while people hail him as a puncher, he was a puncher at a lower weight and his last 3 fights have all gone the distance. Apparently Morales also took that fight on only one days notice and went the distance.
His only chance I feel is to hurt Harrison early, if he doesn't hurt Harrison within the first 4 then I reckon Harrison takes it.

When I looked at his record I thought the same thing as you, namely, "who the fornicate has this guy actually beaten to be rated so highly."
Harrison has faced better opponents than Guzman has, and will also be by far the biggest guy Guzman has faced. Morales might have been a super featherweight, but Harrison is a light welterweight.
Guzman looks like he has very good basic skills, but I am pretty certain he is going to want to try and knock Harrison out.
As you say, his best chance ls to hurt Harrison early and take him out, but I wonder whether his punches are going to be all that destructive against someone like Harrison.
My prediction is that Harrison wins a close points decision, I don't think he will stop Guzman, because Joan looks to have a very good chin and Scott isn't a puncher.

My prediction is that Guzman stops the static, robotic Harrison in about 9 rounds, although tragically, I can see Harrison perhaps grinding Guzman down.
But my head and heart say Guzman by late TKO.
And if I hear the word "smeg" one more time, I think i'll scream!

I don't think Joe Morales has ever been stopped. He has one of the best chins in boxing for a journeyman.
That said, Guzman does have flaws, and the Harrison fight is far from a foregone conclusion. I just think that Harrison looks more ripe for a loss than Guzman does at this point.

Harrison probably wouldn't look ripe for a loss if he was mixing at the same level as Guzman. Harrison is facing better quality opponents and those opponents make him look vulnerable. We've yet to see Guzman mix it at a good level and I get a strong feeling that he won't be able to cope with Harrison.
Harrison will probably look 2 to 3 weight divisions above him on the night, have a huge strength advantage and will have more experience than Guzman in having tough fights. If Guzman goes for his usual come in swinging and blow him out early tactic he is playing right into Harrisons hands because Harrison hates chasing people and will be more than happy to trade and if Harrison can take his punch then it will all come down to Harrisons imense strength and I think he will boss him around and put him on the back foot. I go for Harrison on points.

Alex Arthur says he turned down sparring with Guzman recently in the US:

Reckoned it was unpatriotic. Also says Guzman was well over 11 stone a while back. Can't wait for the fight personally. I fancy Guzman to bang Harrison out if he makes weight properly. The way he crushed Agapito Sanchez was quite something and Harrison has been taking too many shots in his last few fights.

jamesmcdonnell...
In that fight, Guzman was training off-and-on due to fight complications. He ended up taking hte fight in 7-10 days notice (though Morales took the fight in less notice). Also it was his first time fighting at 130. Before that, he fought in 122.
Guzman has poor defence? Disagree. If you check it out, his "poor defence" comes when he's bein' nonchalant. Also, when's goin' full out offense...
But if you check him out...
When he's goin' fullout offense...
Opponents don't attack back due to the risk of heavy damage. Otherwise, he's quite elusive.
It's okay...
Guzman should make most people believers after he beats Harrison.
Then again...
Who's Harrison?

A reigning 2 time WBO world champion and a former British commonwealth champion with wins over former world champions in Wayne McCullough, Manuel Medina and Julio Pablo Chacon. The only Scot to ever regain a world championship and has the most defences for any Scot as well I think. He is also a man who is under rated in his willingness to fight anyone and an all around tough bastard.

James,
When watching the Morales fight in the process of getting the disc burned, I too wasn't impressed with Guzman - I remembered the fight as him looking like a P4P canditate for the opening five rounds but then gasing - but even in the early stages he didn't look invincable, very wild and inexperienced.
However, got to respect the mans power - Joe Morales is a tough old so and so. Hurting Morales would be like seeing Martin Power hurting Wayne McCullough - we would be so impressed if Power could do that.
I still see a war, and if Harrison can take his power then I give the Scott a huge chance - but, Brodie and Hussein are all smaller guys who hurt the champion - and Estrada, Medina (relatively light punchers) also hurt him.
The power of these guys do not compare to Guzman, and I would give Guzman a definate edge in handspeed over these opponents.
I think its a huge fight for both fighters, but I see the challenger stopping Scott.

That's how a ring announcer would put it.

I've never heard Michael Buffer say anything about a contradiction in terms

Yes agreed, he can obviously hit, Morales must be checked over to make sure he isn't an android, because he barely even registered that he'd been hit.
As I said, Guzman looks like he has good skills, but when he goes on the offence he throws it all out the window. The thing which will make it hard for Scott is that he has a defecit in handspeed and power, but I don't think Guzman is a fighter who will enjoy being put under pressure. Harrison is unlikely to outbox him, but he could well outwork him.

If what you says is true then thats a shame. The pundits on ITV were talking him up to be a real dangerous brawler.
It's a shame Harrison has said hes moving up after this fight, I'd love to see him in with Marquez or Chi.
If he does move up, a debut fight at super featherweight against Alex Arthur would be good.

As they would with the ibo, wbf, wbu etc. etc. etc.

Like a featherweight will do that!
Mc Cullough didn't even make him move.
It's boxing him that troubles him like Brodie was doing until the unlucky KO shot.

I have to say, I rewatched that fight the other night, and Brodie was really giving Harrison murders. After that shaky start he was really giving Harrison some licks and had him hurt on a number of occasions.
Brodie got hit on the bell at the end of the round and it was clear that something was wrong when he came out for the next round, because he had his arms virtually clamped to his sides to avoid a follow up.
What was it that happened exactly, did he have a broken rib?
The one thing about Guzman is that if he hurts Harrison, he definetly has the speed to follow up and finish the job. Harrison has a good chin, but it;'s not in McCulloch's class, McCulloch never even looks stunned let alone hurt, whereas Harrison can be hurt and halted in his tracks, but recovers pretty fast.
I am not sure who I think will win the fight, I think I favour Guzman ever so slightly as he has a few advantages over Harrison, but I do wonder whether he will be prepared for the brute strength and persistence that Scott brings.

What significance does that have? McCullough cant crack an egg at 122 let alone 126.

I might have missed out on some news , but didn't he say he'd be at the weight for another 18 months ?

Oh right, I thought you were questioning my phrasing of the sentence not the title legitimacy. As far as I'm concerned there are 4 titles I will consider legit world titles and WBO would probably be 4th on the list but I also take into account how the man acts as champion. In my opinion Harrisons defences as WBO champion during both reigns have been better than WBA champion Chris Johns and recent WBC champion In-Jin Chi's. The only one who has a better defence list is Marquez so yeah I consider Harrison a world champion.

With all due respect to the thread starter, Joe Morales is the worst possible introductory fight to Guzman you could choose...he was lacklustre and uninterested for the reasons described above by another poster..check out the sanchez or Oliva fights....I think this will be a bit of a blowout by the way

McCulloch cant punch anywhere near as hard as Guzman.
