It's possible that they don't have complete records of those fighters considering it was quite awhile back.

So he decides to retire after 112 professional fights at the ripe old age of....17?

A lot of those 0-0 records could be simply caused by lack of historical evidence.

Jack Kearns and Mickey Walker didn't seem to think so, nor anyone of note from the boxing fraternity of the time... but I suppose looking back at names on an internet database at fighters you've never seen you'd know more about the fight game than them?

If you had even a vague knowledge of the records on boxrec from this era you'd know that the majority of them are vastly incomplete. In reality most of his opponents had more fights than a leading fighter today will have in his entire career. The only way they get to appear on boxrec is if someone painstakingly trawls through several years worth of newspapers recording the results.

the kid was pretty well built. too bad he was washed up by the age of 17, hell at 17 mike tyson the earliest bloomer i can think of hadnt even reached his prime yet.


nipper pat daly is a great example of mis management and handling someone. they should have let the kid grow, hell most of his fights were BEFORE HE HIT PUBERTY!

Nipper Pat Daly's story is incrediable! I also feel that
he shouldn't have turned pro at eight or nine years
of age, but notice that the poor kid was going through
hell to make weight towards the end of his career,
Think about it.....Daly was only 17 when he was
washed up. At that age, most boys are growing
rapidly in terms of both weight and height.

Spot on. He was forced to make ridiculous weights at an age when he should have been growing rapidly. As a full grown adult he was (certainly for his day) a big man: around 5'11" and over 13 stone.

Had he been brought on gradually and allowed to grow into a comfortable weight class, who knows how far he could have gone. In a way he was a victim of his own talent; had he not been so good, at such a young age (able to beat the best fighters in Europe), he no doubt would never have been pushed so far, so early.

Really Newton should have been strung up for the way he handled Nipper, utter madness!... I'm sure Daly would have at least won British and Europeon titles had he been allowed to mature properly, he could well have been one of our greatest world champions!.... very sad story...

Yep Sean Ogrady turned pro at 16 retired at 24. Maybe he made some dough at least.

That's another good example but as I said, it usually happens not always... there are a few such as Morales, Barrera, etc. that don't end so quickly. I wonder why.. (probably because they face lower class competition until they're bodies are more of like that of an adult's than that of a teenager..)
