Considering all the controversy over their first fight, I was wondering if The Ring magazine covered the fight, and if so, how did their ringside correspondent score the fight?

Hold on...

On Marciano vs La Starza 1.

Marciano knocked down LaStarza in round 4. The referee thought Rocky was ahead on points.

The 1st judge: 5 rds to Marciano, 4 to Lastarza, 1 drawn
The 2nd judge: 5 rds to Lastarza, 4 to Marciano, 1 drawn
The 3rd judge: 5 rds apiece.

SO, the judges thought that the fight was all-square,

The referee gave the Marciano the victory due to the knockdown...

I know Ring covered both fights. I should have the issue, so I'll check and see. If you like I'll scan the article and post it here.

Thanks Crease. I'm aware of the officials scores for the fight, and I don't dispute them. Actually, if the officials for the fight were being influenced by Al Weill as LaStarza claims, then why would Referee Jack Watson have taken away the 8th round from Marciano because of a low blow? Yes Barry, I would very much be interested in reading the Ring article about the first fight. I already have a copy of the article about the 2nd fight.

marciano wasnt ready for a 1st class counter puncher and world class fight like roland lastarza at that point in rocky's career. im suprised rocky did so well, it shocked the hell out of goldman who thought there was no way rocky could outpoint lastarza and would have to knock him out to win.

It's in the June 1950 issue of Ring, which I don't have. I have July 1950 which has an article about LaStarza that talks a little about the fight, but not a recap. The writer in this article, W.C. Heinz, states that LaStarza had Marciano hurt in the fourth, but instead of going in after the knockout he laid back, which by the end of the bout cost him as both of his eyes were cut, his face was busted up and his prestige and standing now worse.

I have the New York Times recap of the fight, which if you would like send me your e-mail in a PM, I'll e-mail it to you.

interesting! because round 4 was also the round where marciano floored lastarza with a big overhand right at the end of the round. must have been a hell of a round.
