Sorry to spoil your party, but it was clear to me from day one that Lacy was taylor-made and hand-selected, and that his limitations would feed perfectly into Calzaghe's highspeed-slapping style.

allegedly did a great job. After all, he took stick for 10 years until such a taylor-made beltholder finally came along.

Joe has probably watched too much Sumo-wrestling. His style isn't dissimilar to some of these guys....

Is boxing knowledge squarely based on how much money you make vs bookies? I swear, more and more each day I get surprised at the way people determine boxing knowledge.

I've bet with a bookie one time my entire life, and it was such a mess I have no desire ever to do it again.

Let's move things into perspective - the pure joy of arguing may have gotten me to overshoot the target here or there.

Calzaghe's win over Lacy was very impressive. Not only did he display his usual strenghts - handspeed, determination, chin, stamina - but he also showed a degree of accuracy that we hadn't seen before, plus he fought less flat-footed than in the past. A fine win that showed yet again Calzaghe's potential as a classy fighter.

This said, the Lacy-win is nowhere near enough to elevate Calzaghe to pfp-status. For this Lacy was too taylor-made - and I said this before the fight, not only thereafter. Strong but immobile and rather slow, exactly the kind of fighter where Calzaghe can maximize the impact of his amazing handspeed.

For me Calzaghe needs to prove - and the Lacy fight didn't change this- that he can also win when his opponent's stye does NOT suit him. Fight a classy evasive counter-puncher. Calzaghe hasn't done so in his entire career.

And what better opponent would there be than the gifted WBA-champ Mike Kessler. Take my word for it: if Calzaghe takes on and beats Kessler - he doesn't need a shoot-out like on Saturday, a solid win would be entirely enough - he'll get all respect in the world from me. In fact, even a narrow loss would increase my respect for the Welshman.

I think this is fair. Lacy was hardly the next TZU was he? No-one ever said he had a complete rang of skills. It was the left hook, and after recent performances the right too. That's pretty much it.
The devestating puncher was made to look like a chump by the acuurate, fast and mobile boxer. This is not exaclt a first.
Maybe not pound-for-pound top ten, but he did more than enough to get the backing of all of britain. Come on Joe!

He's proved himself enough Pundit.

If Kessler wants it then he should make some noise like Lacy did and it should happen. He was ringside after all to witness it.

As far as I am concerned we in the UK should be proud of Joe - He did a great job beating Lacy - It was a conclusive win which I for one didnt expect - Joe for some reason just doesnt get the glory or credit afforded to Hatton, why I dont know - He will probably retire in the next couple of years and should after that be remembered as one of our best ever boxers - The problem is there will be those who will always say had he fought Collins or Benn and the chances are he wont get the full recognition he deserves - The fight against Lacy was a classic, one of the best I have ever seen - Joe gets 10/10 for me

Let’s be fair to Pundit - he did say Calzaghe would beat Lacy BEFORE the fight.

However why he loves Kessler so much is beyond me.
I suspect he just likes to stir the pot. Why else start a thread praising the cure for insomnia, Sven Ottke?

Kessler’s record is not all that great from my reading of it, and Calzaghe would see him off.

Pundit said he's got to prove himself by fighting 'a classy evasive counter-puncher'. Well there's Chris Eubank, Richie Woodhall and to some extent, Robin Reid. Not a bad list of counterpunchers.

Like to see a classy counterpuncher outbox Calzaghe, who people don't realise is very quick.

Takaloo's sparred with Joe and said he's got fantastic handspeed and is extremely strong.

The only one you list who fits the description in my book is Robin Reid - and this fight Calzaghe almost lost.

But we seem to agree that it would be interesting to see Calzaghe in such a matchup. Btw, I'm not married to the idea of Joe fighting Kessler; Kessler just seems to be the best around at this stage, and if Joe wants to fight the best this is his natural opponent. But I'd also watch Calzaghe-Mundine with interest, or Calzaghe-Beyer. I would also take Calzaghe-Erdei. Calzaghe against any reasonably strong opponent who isn't taylor-made for Calzaghe's style.

Kessler has been making noise ever since. But he won't get the fight. Team Calzaghe won't take that risk.

To be fair, Kessler already called Joe out last year. He hasn't got much profile yet is the problem, but I believe that after that fight, Calzaghe can fill an arena in wales with ease fighting Kessler.

The fights Calzaghe wants now are the `celebrity` fights, Jones Jr., Tarver, Hopkins and maybe even Winky Wright..the ones the yanks eat up...and will earn him the most money.

Hopkins earned most of his money and recognition with these fights(De La Hoya and Tito) so why shouldn`t Joe cash in also, atleast the opposition will be the same weight.

Kessler could be more difficult than any of the listed above because he is more than competent in all departments, but is not really known so can be easilly side stepped, but I would like to see Joe face him to remove all doubt as to the undisputed 168 champ..Beyer means nothing anyway...then cash in and wipe the floor with the older overhyped yanks :TU:

the more time JC stays at s/m the more faded Tarver will get. already AT has serious stamina problems. Kessler got an 80% vote on the current scene, btw, for who JC's next foe should be.
