Calzaghe vs Beyer possible!
March 14, 2006
By Daniel Hiller
World champion Markus Beyer has received an offer for a title unification clash against Joe Calzaghe. Beyer holds the WBC super middleweight title, while Calzaghe, who triumphed at the beginning of March in a unification fight against Jeff Lacy, holds the WBO and IBF titles. Calzaghe's promoter allegedly today made an offer in writing for a fight between the two world champions.
"We have interest in this fight and we're pleased that they do in England also," said Beyer's promoter Wilfried Sauerland. "However the current offer for us is not acceptable - it is financially insufficient and besides the date overlaps with the World Cup championship. But we are in negotiations and we would gladly let this attractive fight take placein September or October."
Beyer defended his title last January in Berlin against Italian Alberto Colajanni (KO12). Before that he defeated Omar Sheika on points.
Joe Calzaghe has won all 41 fights in his professional career (31 KOs). He boxed in Germany in May 2005, retaining his title via stoppage against Mario Veit in six rounds.
Beyer will defend his title first on May 13 in Zwickau. The super fight could follow in autumn against Calzaghe. "Naturally unification fights are very attractive fights for the spectators, and that is a goal also for me," said the 34-year-old Beyer. "A fight against Calzaghe, which it would involve three belts, is a huge challenge."

i think calaghe easily beats beyer before the 5.

Two points:
1) Warren should make an offer to Kessler.
2) Still, Beyer is more of a challenge than Lacy. He uses his feet.

No way can I see Beyer taking on Calzaghe. He's looked vulnerable for quite a while now against fighters not even on Calzaghe's level. Reading between the lines this statement sounds to me like 'We will demand more money than will ever be on offer to fight Calzaghe'
I'd rather Joe fought Kessler, though this would be a good leverage fight for it.

Same here as regards Kessler, but as for Beyer - to me he looked pretty strong and solid in his last 3 fights.

I'm suprised they used the football world cup as an excuse

German TV is totally booked up with the world cup so there is no room for boxing in the schedule, just like there wasnt any big cards in Germany during the Winter olympics (and part of the deal probably is that Beyer get German TV rights)

I'm sure they could go with another summer date if they really wanted it. I reckon they take the fight for the summer or it doesn't happen at all, Joe has options. Of course the alternative is to take up Beyer on the autumn date and negotiate with Kessler for the date he is looking for now with the winner taking on Beyer for all the gold.

No way. It might be correct that Beyer has better footwork than Lacy, but Beyer is chinny as fook.

Where do you take that from? As far as I know he's never been knocked out. Besides, Calzaghe isn't exactly a puncher.

He was stopped in the 12th round against Glenn Catley

No way do the Germans want to throw Beyer in as cannon fodder for Calazghe, unless it's for BIG bucks - which SN clearly wont pay. This will never get off the ground and everyone involved knows it. Just take a look at the long runnig Ottke/Calazghe saga
SN are using this tactic quite a lot recently - all those bogus stories running in the press about Khan and Mitchell straining at the leash to get at each other...a fight which will obviously never happen, unless one of them ends up on the scap heap that is.

"Chinny as fook" is an over-exaggeration, but Ive seen a fair bit of Beyer on Eurosport, and as mentioned he was shook-up big-time by Woodhall, Stopped by Catley and was also put down by Danny Green in their first fight in both the first and second rounds.
I dont think Beyer would last long with Calzaghe. I could see it being similar to the 2nd Mario Veit fight. Once Beyer got nailed a few times I dont think he'd really fancy it.

It's the easiest way to pull the "he ducked me" card. I give Hatton a lot of credit for saying he wanted more fights before PBF because he said he didn't feel he was ready. Don't come out and lie about ducking by offering a shit purse break, and expect hardcore fans to be fooled.

I don't think any of these comparisons hold. Beyer is much faster on his feet than Veit, more agile, has better reflexes. Hence Calzaghe will find it much, much harder to corner and overwhelm Beyer. And Green put an unfocused Beyer down twice, but Beyer got up as often and, as a matter of fact, got back into the fight. Besides, Calzaghe doesn't have the one-punch-power Green posesses.
The key factor is: Calzaghe prefers fighters who stand in front of him, such as Lacy or Veit. This is when his outstanding handspeed can take full effect. But Beyer won't stand in front of him. This does not mean that Beyer will win, but it means Calzghe-Beyer is a different ballgame from most of Calzaghe's other fights. In fact, a ballgame where we don't really know how good Joe masters it. Which would make the match-up interesting.
This saidl, the fight that really should be made is Calzaghe-Kessler. Team Calzaghe appears to offer unification fights to everyone but the Dane these days.
You wonder why.

It would have been a fantastic fight a few years back - my god I was impressed with him vs Woodhall - but he has regressed and although his reign has been at his longest now, but he has regressed and is still not the same fighter after the Catley fight.
I have managed to get hold of a few of his pre first world title fights recently, and he was very very good - arguably better than Ottke. However, he is for the taking now.

Have you seen him recently? He seems to be back on track.

Yes I have, and I don't think he is the fighter he was... Was losing to Sarnavia before KO'ing him, I thought was lucky to get the decision vs Green and the other opponents were not up to the level - yet, still being extended.
Beyer of 1998/1999 would have been a real threat to Joe (especially during the same period when Joe had some serious injury/weight making issues). Nowadays, I would tip Lacy to beat him in his comeback fight.

I reckon youve gone and got Beyer confused with Sugar Ray Leonard.

For me this is a far better fight than RJJ for the fans. It would be competitive proberbly more so than Lacy because Bayer is a more crafty fighter and ain't going to run in. People seem to think calzaghe no longer wants to fight anyone who doesn't fight like Lacy which is just an odd beliefe. I hope the fight happens and see no reason why with enough money both fighters will not want it.

Have you? Read it again. Almost every mention you make to Calzaghe is linked to a fight with Beyer, and the effect that
Beyer will have on Calzaghe.

Well, all this is relative to VEIT. Relative to Butterbean, Danny Williams is a well-conditioned heavyweight.
