Am I the only one who thinks that the commonwealth games are not only unexciting but meaningless in this day and age?

I mean essentially the games / titles mean Britain and its former colonies... I just can't see the relevance these days and the title means very little.

Does anyone get excited/ care?

looking forward to the boxing coverage, but thats about it. I'll probably watch the 100m if its on.

I agree it's getting there. Especially this time round, there's been questions/accusations/scandal about big names pulling out - like Radcliffe - and how much that is down to the big-name athletes just not viewing the Comms as important anymore.

I'm sure a lot of the smaller nations are still keen to compete and get a bit of spot light in a bigger arena thogh.

Yep, chance for the small nations to get a bit of spotlight and chance for England / Britain to win some medals.

Plus, gives a bit of focus for athletes etc. Bloody addictive for the viewer as well. I was late for work today because I was watching the Welsh against the Northern Irish at bowls.

Also, rather nice to hark back to the days when we owned half of the world, and that half of the world was the portion which was crap at fighting back.

I'd love the Queen to declare her 80th birthday as a national holiday. I'd buy her a gin and orange if she did that.

Seriously, I canned Aerobics Oz Style (the munter 45-year-old with dark hair was annoying me) and flicked onto BBC 1. The bowls was actually quite interesting. But I won't be making a regular feature of it.


Karen Pickering on the radio last night said that for swimmers if the Olympics is the Champions League then the Commonwealths are the Premiership.

I'm checking out my family history to see if there is any Noui Island blood in me. I want to play bowls for the Noui Island.

As a sports nut, I love them - watching it all the time, as I did the Winter Olympics.

I do think though the Commonwealth should be demoted to BBC 2 - I think the Winter Games should have a bigger priority.

My PhD supervisor is currently out in Melbourne as the Sports Scientist to the Cyclists of Britain. Think he is working with all the home nations (well, he works with them when they are under the UK banner). He cannot be too pleased with today. - but least I am having a month off study.

The Rugby 7's has been quite entertaining. I never knew the Noui Islands existed.

Edit - its niue islands apparently.

Yep, caught the hastie fight and thomas' piss poor showing. tad dissapointed for the lad but he was shocking on the night (or on the day).
Sky plused perkins so i'll watch that this evening.
Hastie started slow, then seemed to pick up and in the end won quite comfortably.

I think they're and excellent opportunity for the boxers to gain experience, exposure and achievement. In other words I love 'em.

Already enjoyed some crackers in the prelim rounds on BBC interactive . It's an absolute God send for enthusiasts of the Amateur game. Via the interactive we can now get uninterupted coverage for 2 hours at a time and follow the enventual medalists from the their first contests. The whole thing leaves me as happy as a Pig in shit!

I hope to have every single live fight shown on BBC interactive on DVD for those interested.

Niue's in the south pacific in the middle of nowhere, Nick. It used to be administered by New Zealand as part of The Cook Island. My ex-wife's father was from there. Great people. Nothing much to do there though, so the majority of them have emigrated to New Zealand. Not that there is much to do there, either...

Try telling Tony Bellew they don't mean much, he was gutted not to be picked.

More boxing tonight at seven on interactive. Some quality fights yesterday especially that NI lad at the end who overturned something like a seven point deficit in the last round to win.

They cocked up the boxing today though - 7-12 am GMT, it switched streams without saying it.

The live is 2-6 and then 7:30 - 12 am GMT, I believe - I hope I'm not wrong.

Yeah just showing the best of the action from the home nations fighters from early this morning. The English lads did very well

any live boxing on tonight/morning. didnt see any on the bbc website.
