Your top 10 HW's ever, based on head-2-head?

Hi guys, wanted to know your views on the best HW's ever, based on head-2-head, not accomplishment, longevity etc.

In other words, based on who you feel would have beten who, all HW's being in their prime.

Thanks, :TU:

A ranking based purelyon a head-to-head basis this is difficult, as "styles make fights". E.g., Foreman had Frazier's number but lost to Ali, while Frazier gave Ali three very competitive fights.

And or course we just don't know how Marciano would have done against Ali and how Ali would have done against Lennox Lewis, partly because of the size difference.

But jezzamuno has his "heavyweight dream tournament" on a head-to-head basis , why don't you wait for the outcome of this.

Arsenal, for once we agree...

C'mon boys, We'll answer this topic then in the first week of May, another person will want to talk it, discussing:

How Marciano would have faired against - (Ali, Frazier & Foreman)

Who would have won, Prime Louis vs Prime Marciano.

Who was better overrall, Deempsey or Tunney.

Who would have won, Prime Tyson or Prime Lewis.

Where does Tyson fit into it all.

Then you'll have the Larry Holmes fans who would argue that he's certainly in the top 5.

Then comes the Lennox Lewis fans who say the same thing.

Then some people arguing about Sullivan and J Jackson.

Then comes in JJ Walcott, E Charles, A Moore, F Patterson and Sonny Liston.

Ken Norton and Max Schmeling will also be mentiopned somewhere along the line.

AND

oh yeah, the Evander Hollyfield fan-base will pit him up there...

LET'S JUST NOT ALK ABOUT IT, OKAY?

Nevertheless, I would still rate Marciano as the greatest of all time!

If you take time to look at the posts for the last 3 months you will see that the majority of people included these boxers in their top 10s;

(MOST PEOPLE HAD ALI OR LOUIS AS THEIR NO 1, BUT I WOULD ALWAYS PICK MARCIANO).

Muhammad Ali.
Jack Johnson
Joe Louis.
George Foreman.
Joe Frazier.
Rocky Marciano.
Jack Dempsey.
Larry Holmes.

From here things got a little more scattered. BUT LET'S SAY THAT THESE ARE THE RECOGNISED TOP 8. What other 2 fighters would you put in to compose your top 10 of all time?

These boxers were usually mentioned in peoples top 10s...
Sonny Liston
James J. Jeffries
Mike Tyson
Lennox Lewis
Evander Hollyfield
Ezzard Charles
Jersey Joe Walcott
Gene Tunney
Sam Langford.

Here's a question, who wouldn't have any of these boxers in their top 10s?

nah, sorry BB, as much as I respect you for your deep knowledge of boxing, I think Foreman would KO Liston...

He probably said TKO / cuts, I dont think anyone could KO the rock.

BB,

You did say that Forman would Ko Marciano (very unlikely) and that Marciano wouldn't last 5 rounds with Big George...

Sockdollanger,

I see we are of the same mind, when it comes ot judging Rocky, he was THE GREATEST!

Just because he never proclaimed it every other day
or
wasted 11 years of his life defending the world title against self confessed "bums", HE WAS THE GREATEST in many boxing pundits books.

(I'm not a pundit btw, I'm not smart enough)

PS. No disresepct to Ali or Louis or are the 2nd and 3rd greatest...

I think foreman would stop rocky by TKO

rocky was not the greatest, joe louis or muhammad ali are.

Why are you quick to dimiss Rocky's chances against either of them?

Granted, Rocky never had the puching skill of Louis or the lightingin quickness of Ali but he had his own style, it suited him and he was looking for a KO,

Rocky could've KO'd wiother of these on their hay-day...And he did (hello, Joe Louis), "over the hill" or not...

Liston by KO. He was a better fighter than George in almost every respect.

Foreman was a much better bodypuncher, though. There's really no comparison.

What makes you say that? Give some examples of his superior body-thumping skills.
