Boxer on Beatles album cover

I was always under the impression that the fighter on The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album cover was Ezzard Charles.
I have read this in several different sources.
But, this bio on Sonny Litson says it was him that was featured on the cover, not Charles.
Can anyone clear ths up fo me? Who is it?
Thanks!

It's Liston. I believe having him on the cover inspired The Monkees to use him in their movie HEAD.

Strange. The book "Boxing Unseen Archives" states that it is Charles.
Liston would be the boxer of choice for The Beatles as he was the more well known name.
But why would anyone have it be Charles?

Correct you are...far left in the Robe.....hard to see on this "internet" version. But if you have the album or access to the full pic there is absolutely no doubt that it is indeed the "scowling one".

From what I rember its not really Sonny Liston but his wax effigy from Madame Tussauds.
They origianlly wanted Muhammad Ali for the cover, but couldnt get the rights or something.

The Beatles submitted a list of the people they admired most to be on the album cover.

John Lennon also wanted Jesus Christ and Adolf Hitler to be included on the cover. The record company did not include them because they thought they might offend some people.

Another 60’s British group, the Animals also mentioned Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay in their song “I’m Mad Again”.

Liston was also in an episode of The Monkees where he played The Champ and was on Love American Style as well. He was also in the audience of The Ed Sullivan Show when The Beatles made their second appearance that was broadcast from Miami. When The Fab Four visited a young Cassius Clay at the 5th Street Gym Clay made a point to mention how they came to visit him and not Liston.

Actually it was the Monkees movie called "Head" that Sonny appeared in. He also did a movie called "Moonfire". He stars with Charles Napier, who was the cop gutted by Hannibal Lecter in "Silence of the Lambs".

Never saw Head, but Liston was in an episode of the weekly Monkees show. I very clearly remember watching it at the time. The story was Davey Jones got into the fight game and fought Liston, The Champ. DOn't know if Head or The Monkees weekly show is out on dvd or not. MOonfire sounds interesting.
