Hmmm, those 2 showed more movement in 1:30 of sparring than we see from a "modern" HW in his entire career.

Great find indeed! Does anyone else get the impression that Tate was in control of the action? I know it was just sparring, but it looked to me like they were having at it and Tate was getting the best of Dempsey. Not to mention it looked like a heavy vs a middle!

Looked to me like Jack was taking it easy and could have KO'd Tate anytime he chose. Tate was just trying to fend him off.

What is the year of that film/sparring session?

1919, just before the Willard fight. This is young, hungry Dempsey, and there isn't much footage of that.
Dempsey was clearly working on handling a man of Willard's size in the clinches during this session. What strikes me most about this footage is Dempsey's speed and quickness of foot, slipping Tate's jab effortlessly and closing distance with explosive power near the end of the clip. This is good stuff.

It was interesting watching the referee. One of their clinches looked to be about 25 seconds long, and the referee didn't ever move in to seperate them!
That was fun to watch. Great find Barry.
