allegedly has responded to Dennis Hobson's offer of a side bet on the outcome of Joe Calzaghe vs Clinton Woods - and suggested a wager of £500,000.

I also hear rumours that Joe will fight Otis Grant in July to determine a late 2006 match with Beyer

And since then...........An eary silence from the Steptoe and Son yard.

Perhaps Ricky will stump up the dosh for them from his three-times bigger purse.

Perhaps Ray could throw in one of his carpet shops and few 99p grippers for a bit of added interest.

imo this fight isn't happening this year. Clinton will have a mandatory vs Glen Johnson after his voluntary. i don't see Calzaghe giving up his s/m belts. maybe he'll fight a guy like Grant and then go for Beyer, with Clinton having to wait. I reckon that would be JC's move up to light heavy

i hope it comes off though. could be another classic Welshman vs Yorkshireman rivalry. Macca-Hobson was good enough...

Well i certainly don't take any interest in Calzaghe V Otis Grant for starters.

What is it with british fighters do they do it to piss us off for every jeff Lacy or Kosta Tzue the next fight is always a Maussa or a Otis Grant.

At first I was going to report him to the NSPCC - The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Clinton - but I'll happily put my money where my mouth is," said Warren.
Great comment from Warren that. :TU:

Calzaghe vs. Otis Grant. The fight everybody has been waiting for. Exaclty the right fight for a figher of 34 years who has perhas 2 years left to buld a legacy.

that's only what dan rafael suggested. hopefully the side bet stuff drums up enough interest in calzaghe-woods, instead of scaring off Hobson. i love a good domestic match, and would be great given they're world title holders

well, an Otis Grant fight would make sense as it'd lead to a Beyer fight. Grant is Beyer's top contender. Imagine if they approached Beyer late in the year. He's beaten his yearly stiff, now it's time for his top contender Grant...he can't really do that if Joe has spanked his top contender...also, maybe it'd be a half decent rehearsal, as Grant is a cute lefty type. Like Ashira was a poor man's Lacy, etc. That's how it looks to me.

a bit reminiscent of Hopkins. Hopkins didn't have his big fight till he was in his mid 30s, vs Tito, and he drew on all he knew and dismantled the guy. then he fought a few nondescript foes before taking Joppy's title and cashing in. Calzaghe, nearly 34, obviously had plenty left to batter Lacy, and I think he, his dad and Warren will plan carefully and choose a good foe in their own time.

He's a unified world champ, why should he need to beat Grant to get to Beyer - a fight not many want to see anyway.

it seems silly, but makes sense though. Grant is vaguely similar stylistically and would be to Beyer what Ashira was to Lacy. also, it would give Beyer less of a chance to back out. If Calzaghe was Beyer's top contender...

of course then you have WBO and IBF mandatories getting in the way. i think Markussen is the WBO #1 but he doesn't seem to want to take world title opportunities

Maybe it has something to do with Grant being mandatory (or does he still need an eliminator), if Calzaghe fights him, them maybe the WBC mandatory wont be due until next year. Could just be a part of a big plan?

I haven't seen Grant since this new lease of life he has found in his comeback but can he be competetive with Calzaghe? Can't they just pay him step aside money or isn't it that simple, will the WBC strip Beyer or something? I'm confused.

Grant is really a middleweight. He would have been a good challenger for Hopkins in the 1990s, but now he has very minimal punch output. I think his win over Wiggins last year made him WBC #1. Beyer would box his ears off and doubt Grant could hang in there more than 8 rds vs Calzaghe.

A very little bit reminiscent - Tito was a different number than Lacy.

As for "Grant leads to Beyer" - I don't quite see why. Calzaghe shouldn't need to beat Beyer's number 1 challenger to challenge Beyer himself. All Beyer's and Calzaghe's management would need to do is to agree on a purse and a place.

But then, Calzaghe should really go after Kessler, who's well known to be the strongest s-m besides Calzaghe. Every other fight he picks, at least at s-m, leaves a foul taste.

Really? You think so?? Do you wear Kessler pyjamas to bed by any chance?

Calzaghe cannot become WBC mandatory when he holds another sanctioning bodies title - 2 in fact. So beating Grant isnt going to get him any closer to a fight with Beyer.

Yep, so if Calzaghe beats Grant he is only knocking Grant down the WBC ladder, making way for another No 1 contender in his place, maybe Danny Green or Librado Andrade.

obviously he doesn't Have to beat Grant to get to Beyer. he can't fight Beyer until sept time, maybe they want the july fight to have some kind of meaning. maybe Grant was mentioned cos he's superficially like Beyer (cute southpaw stylist), and maybe the WBC take plenty of time digging up their next unworthy, creating a space (a brief window of opportunity to make the fight), who knows? Going for Grant, if he does, gives out signals such as 'I'm going to take over your territory, matey'. What will the response be?

but how long till the IBF and WBO impose their mandatories on JC, that's another question?

who would ppl rather see Calzaghe fight - Woods or Beyer?

I disagree with that guy saying that Woods isn't a top fighter. He's looked an elite fighter in his last two fights, dominating top contenders as an elite fighter should be able to (agreed, Gonzalez is overrated), and has a draw with Glen Johnson.

IMO Warren is putting Joe up only against guys who will travel to England.

I reckon SN make more with JC fighting in England than in the US

I am very doubtful FW will put JC on in the US

What has Boxingchat Warren got to say about the Grant fight?

No doubt Warren makes more with him fighting over here. As he doesn't take a management fee from his fighters would he make much at all from Calzaghe fighting in the US?

Posted: 05 Apr 2006, 04:02
by Autobarn
he doesn't necessarily need to fight in America. you can see why Hatton would, as all the best of 135, 140 and 147 are in America. But apart from Tarver, who is there to go to America for?

Briggs and Adamek maybe - they fought each other in America and both showed outstanding potential on the world scene, but Don King reserves them for undercards, if he can use them at all! despicable. That also means they're little known and at the same time extremely dangerous.

if he stays at s/m, no reason why he should leave the UK as he's the champ, with two of the 4 main belts and an emphatic win over a rival title holder. and a light heavy shot would almost certainly be against Woods.

why does Boxingchat have a problem with how much Ricky is being paid?
Can he not except that he is being paid 3x what he earned for Tzyu?
he should be more concerned with how much Joe will be paid for his future fights!
I hope Frank has a signed agreement with Joe!!
A lot of people think he works for FW but it is difficult to see what role he could perform, unless he cleans F's car!
