- this was defintley witherspoons peak fight, so i dont want to hear any witherspoon was "green" crap.

witherspoon also reminded me of ken norton in some ways. in other ways he reminded me of archie moore. i rate witherspoon # 32 greatest heavyweight of all time, I rate larry holmes # 4.

Spoon was a good fighter no doubt. The thing about this guy was his constant battle with Don King . I dont remember all the details, but if I had to make a wild stab at it I would guess that it was more than likely about money. ..That would be my guess. Anyway He seemed to have periods of inactivity as a result of this. King ran the Heavyweights in the 80s. Spoon was constantly distracted by this saga.

I watched a documentary and Witherspoon was saying how he psyched out Bruno. He certainly is interesting to listen to. I liked him and would have loved to see him fight Tyson. If he was in the right frame of mind and weathered the early storm he would have had a chance.

Tim Witherspoon will probably go down, as one of the most under-rated and under-valued Heavyweights of the modern era, if not in history.

Being only 15-0 and giving Larry Holmes (42-0) a helluva time, and possibly one of the most closest decisions in recent years, isn't something to laugh at.

Being a two time champion in the WBC and WBA isn't something to scoff either. Posting wins over fighters like Tubbs, Bruno, Smith, Page, Tillis, Snipes, Ribalta, Williams---and fighting well into 2003 still as a worthy contender, as well as holding minor titles like the USBA and NABF, is nothing to snicker at either.

Consider this, how many great names did Holmes face? Witherspoon had almost virtually every worth-while man in the division to face, with exception of Lewis, Tyson, Holyfield.

And most of his losses weren't by KO, they were by decision. The majority of the KO losses came when he was already in his 40's. 9 of his 13 losses were decisions.

The other 4 losses, 3 of the KO's were from 1999-2003. And mind you this, he held wins over David Bostice and Elicier Castillo in his later years, and these guys were considered top 20-15 contenders...and he was facing off for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental title, so there was talk of him facing for the WBO title held by Wladimir Klitschko at the time.

Witherspoon was no bum to say the least. He was certainly better than most of the WBA champions there was, and I'd say fit easily into the top 5 Heavies of the 80's. Why he never got to face Tyson or the really big names I will never know.

..because he was dangerous and had the ability to beat people on his day.

Looking back it seems like Spoon's best performance but after this fight there were many who considered that he had a lot still to come. He would go on to learn a lot more about boxing but maybe he was never as trim again.

There should have been a rematch.

Tim could never hold on to those titles for very long which was a real shame. Around the time Holmes fought Bey, Williams and Spinks it was Spoon and Thomas who were shaping up as the most likely guys to emerge from the pack post-Holmes.

Tim was a top fighter and always seemed like the biggest test for Tyson in the 80s.

Tim got screwed over by Don King, and that motivation was gone.Never should've gotten kayoed by Bonecrusher, however.

Witherspoon and Bruno fought a great fight with Bruno finally scummbling to TIm's big overhand rights.

I have on tape his fight with Pinklon Thomas and Witherspoon wasnt any where near the form he was in against Holmes, he was slow, wild, throwing looping shots, he just looked he didnt want to be in there while Thomas wasnt as good either just soley sticking out his jab.
The Witherspoon of the Tubbs fight wasnt much better and I was very surpised to see how Witherspoon changed from such a talented fighter to a fighter who just didnt look impressive.

The Witherspoon of Holmes would of knocked out Thomas and would of KO'ed Bruno much sooner.

A bad fight for Witherspoon was just before he fought Holmes where he sleepwalked through ten listless rounds and an unimpressive decsision over Renaldo Snipes. He talked pretty openly about his disagreements over money with Don King. Probably had an effect on him in his second fight with The Bonecrusher. In contrast another guy who was not happy with the money he was earning was Hagler. The big difference was Hagler always maintained a laser like focus while training and also in the ring. He had the ability to seperate the two.

Just goes to show that it takes all types I suppose :TU: An excellent fighter was the Spoon when motivated and focused. An example of how he became distracted and unmotivated was when he apparently walked away with $70K for the Bruno fight from a $1 mill + purse

I also think it was Witherspoon that replied, when asked why he went back to King "I was a damsel in distress" :D
