According to an article by Daniel Hiller on the Fightnews
website, former WBC world super welterweight champion
Eckhard Dagge has passed away after a bout with cancer
at the age of 58. Dagge won the title when he won by
TKO in the ten round over Elisha Obed, the defending
champion, on June 17, 1976. As a result, Dagge was
the first German to win a world championship since
Max Schmeling did in 1930.

After two successful title defenses, Dagge lost his title
when he was TKOed by Rocco Mattioli in August 1977.
Dagge retired with a record of 26-5-1 after TKOed by
Brian Anderson on November 6, 1981.

It was in brawls in taverns that Dagge got his first
experience in taverns before becoming an amateur
boxer at the age of 20. He went on to win sixty-six
out of eighty bouts in the amateur ranks. After not
being select to the German team for the 1972 Munich
Olympics, Dagge became a professional boxer and
won a German championship in his sixth pro bout.
In 1975, he won a European championship.

After his pro boxing career ended, Dagge became
a trainer. In 1991, he became the first professional
trainer of Dariusz Michalczewski while with a Hamburg
promotional organization, Universe Box-Promotion.
Dagge also trained Michael Lowe with the same
organization. Later on, Dagge guided Mario
Schiesser of Berlin to the German heavyweight
title.

Chronic problems with alcohol would eventually
end his career as a trainer and his association
with Universum at the beginning of 1994. This
meant that he would not guide Michalczewski
to an eventual world championship.

Note- I saw Dagge training at the Hoover Street
Gym (where a number of black fighters trained)
in Los Angeles during the middle 1970s. It
appeared that he understood the English
language at the time. As I recall, Dagge was
training for a scheduled bout with Maurice
Hope.

Note- I wrote that Dagge didn't fight Maurice
Hope, but that statement turned out to be
untrue. As a result, I make a correction.

Thats too bad . Relaitively young guy. I never saw him fight . Looks like he fought some good fighters. Didnt really have that many fights . You wonder how much the firewater might have played a roll in his career.
